Martin "Flying Martini" Jordan flew for Ferris Aircraft and fought alongside Chuck Yeager in Europe. He was renowned for shooting down six Nazi planes. In Spring 1948, Martin's son, Hal snuck into Edwards Air Force Base to find his hero, Yeager. With a Hop Harrigan watch, Blackhawk comic, Science Digest and model plane in tow, the two met.

Hal Jordan grew up to become a naturally gifted pilot and enlisted in the Korean War. He served for 14 months. Jordan became notorious for refusing to use lethal force during enemy engagements. Instead of being discharged, he was allowed to continue fighting since he exhibited bravery and courage under fire by using himself to bait enemy planes into his squadron's sights. On the day of the armistice, July 7, 1953, Jordan and Colonel Ace Morgan were engaged by two enemy Mig fighters. Forced to parachute, he landed in Yalu River and was forced to kill a North Korean soldier to survive.

He was remorseful about killing and spent six months in a psyche ward, meditating on his past and future. Jordan felt lost, until his superior Morgan took him to Las Vegas. They were caught in Captain Cold's botched robbery when the Flash appeared. Later that night, Jordan and Morgan drove into the California desert where Morgan revealed he recommended Jordan to Ferris Aircraft as a test pilot. He quickly fell in love with its president, Carol Ferris.

After two months of preperation and an absurd battery of exercises, he earned the nickname "Timex," after the famous timepiece, because he "takes a licking and keeps on ticking." Though he and supervisor Colonel Flagg were ideologically opposed, the Operation Flying Cloud continued. After a malfunction, Flagg decided to blow the rocket as it contained three warheads, but Jordan was convinced he could land it. Superman intervened and rescued Jordan. While sulking, Jordan was teleported to the desert by Abin Sur and chosen to be his successor. For valuing life above his own and believing in his convictions, Jordan would become the next Green Lantern.

Confronted with the threat of the Centre, Jordan flew to Florida and volunteered to help deliver an explosive payload with Morgan from within the Centre. While inside, the two were nearly killed but Jordan was contacted by the Guardians of the Universe and activated his ring. The ailing Centre was launched into space by Green Lantern. Jordan went on to help found the Justice League of America.
