Leonard Snart was raised by an abusive father. Snart took confort with his grandfather, who was an ice truck driver. Following his grandfather's death, Snart fell into a life of crime. He soon joined a gang of would be robbers and was issued a gun and a visor, intended to protect its user's eyes from gunfire flashes. Snart later added a radio receiver in order to listen in on the police bandwidth. The gang was soon rounded up by the Flash.
Considering a solo enterprise, Snart researched ways to stop the Flash. In one article, it was theorized that the energy emissions of a cyclotron would interfere with the Flash's powers. He broke into the cyclotron lab and used the device to charge up his experimental gun. Snart was surprised by a security guard. He used the gun to scare the guard away but discovered the gun could freeze someone in their tracks. Snart incorporated a parka to his wardrobe and called himself Captain Cold, the Man who Mastered Absolute Zero.
Tired of being routinely defeated by the Flash, Captain Cold relocated to Las Vegas and only to have one of hostages to be Iris West, girlfriend of Barry Allen who was the Flash. As a back up plan, Cold hid five cyrogenic bombs around the city and used it as a diversion to escape the scene. The Flash deduced Cold was lying about the number of bombs and disabled his getaway vehicle, a helicopter. Cold was briefly possessed by the telepathic might of the Centre. In that instant, the Flash sabotaged his Icer gun and left Cold on ice. He was then taken into custody by Argent and kept deep below the California desert.
