In 1956, Central City, Illinois, police scientist Barry Allen was working late into the night. Allen was notorious for his slow and methodical style. A stray lightning bolt hit Allen, who was doused in several chemicals. He discovered he gained super speed like his idol, the Flash. Inspired by Garrick's comics, he became the new Flash.
After adjusting the best that he could to his powers, Allen crafted a normal-looking ring that housed his costume. The Flash confronted several costumed crooks like the Pied Piper and Captain Cold but Central City was still plagued with over 4000 unsolved cases. Over time, he developed an inferiority complex. The Flash had a great gift and a strong will to do great things with it but made only small progress with stopping bank robbers and jewel thieves.
Allen fell in love with investigative reporter, Iris West. While she was away in Las Vegas, West was taken hostage by Captain Cold. The Flash rescued her and stopped him, cold. In 1958, Argent attempted to capture him. Flash used his super speed to vibrate his atoms to a frequency that allowed him to pass through objects and escape. He interrupted one of Walter Kronkite's newcasts and announced his disgust with the way of the world and retired.
When news of the Centre appeared on television, Allen couldn't stand idle and joined the fight in Florida. He volunteered himself to be armed with Ray Palmer's matter shrinking device and expose the Centre to it. The Flash survived thanks to Wonder Woman and the Martian Manhunter and went onto help form the Justice League of America.
