The aerospace mogul, Carl Ferris had only one child, a daughter named Carol Ferris. Despite the glass ceiling of discrimination and reinforced gender roles, she proved herself to be an adept businesswomen and became the family company's Vice President. Handling day to day affairs, Ferris became involved in a joint project with the federal government, dubbed Operation Flying Cloud. It was a program designed to leapfrog ahead of current space agencies and land on Mars. Taking recommendations from the military community, Ferris interviewed Hal Jordan and decided he would be the project's pilot. Despite company policy, Ferris and Jordan were drawn to each other and their romance began.
Without Ferris' clearance, Argent placed three warheads into the spacecraft as a contingency. Years later, a group of females opposite to the Guardians of the Universe, the Zamarons sought to induct their latest queen. They chose to bestow the title of Star Sapphire to Ferris. When Ferris refused, the Zamarons brainwashed her and created a dual identity for her. They soon learned Ferris' lover was a Green Lantern and set the two against each other. Each time, Ferris would awaken with no memory of what happened.
