The Guardians of the Universe are one of the eldest races. About five billion years ago, the Guardians first evolved on the planet Maltus. Krona, a Maltusian scientist, attempted to go back in time and observe the Great Hand call the universe into being. This act caused a blast of cosmic energy to create an antimatter universe. Out of guilt, the Maltusians migrated to Oa, where the Great Hand existed, and declared they would enforce peace throughout the universe.
They channeled magical energies into a central power battery and started the Green Lantern Corps. They charted the known universe into 3600 space sectors and recruited desireable aliens to police each one.
When Abin Sur lost communication with the Guardians, they made telepathic contact and found the ring was passed to another. They guided Hal Jordan to wield the ring and stop the Centre.
