Kal-El was born as his home planet, Krypton, was at its end. His father, Jor-El, a brilliant scientist, sent his son away in a rocket with a few choice items, including the symbol of his family. Kal-El landed on Earth in Smallville, Kansas. He was discovered and raised by Jonathan and Martha Kent. They named him Clark from Martha's maiden name. Clark was raised with a strong sense of ethics and morals and when he came of age, he discovered Earth's Sun radiated him and gave him a range of super powers.
After a couple years, he decided to use his powers for the sake of humanity and became Superman. After relocating to Metropolis, he took a day job as a reporter for the Daily Planet. As Superman, he quickly fell in love with top reporter, Lois Lane and joined the Justice Society of America. After the 1951 "Joint Congressional Un-American Activities Committee," many of the Justice Society decided to retire. Superman didn't. He was one of six to take a loyalty oath and was assigned to help round up the remaining heroes, including close ally, Batman. During a staged showdown, Superman feigned defeat so Batman could escape and continue to operate in Gotham City.
Codenamed Bishop Six, Superman covertly carried out U.S. foreign policy across borders. When Wonder Woman failed to report in Cambodia, he investigated and was shocked to see an armed group of women and slain men. Upon further discussion and the sequence of events to come, Superman became a leader of the next generation of super heroes and rallied both sides to fight against the Centre. Afterwards, he struck up a close friendship with fellow exiled alien, the Martian Manhunter and helped found the Justice League of America.
