According to the Book of Oa, first chapter, first verse, "Long ago, before our stars had ignited...long ago, when life was new and the universe was in its infancy, before order there was chaos. Chaos outbalanced creation, hate outbalanced fellowship...and all life suffered." The Guardians of the Universe could no longer stand by idle. They gathered the light and sought a solution to the universe's suffering. From the light, a weapon formed, of unrivaled power. The Guardians gathered the greatest warriors on Oa and would select the first four among them. Wachet, G'Hu, Blu, and Avra were the first. Avra proved himself as the first Green Lantern by remaining faithful and formed the first construct. This was the beginning. The first rings were passed on, then hundreds more forged, and then thousands. In time old Lanterns would fall and their rings were pased on to the new. This was the way.
The Green Lantern Corps became an elite intergalactic force led by the immortal Guardians of the Universe. Its mandate is to enforce law and order. Considered a privileged organization, only those with the best reputation are chosen to patrol the 3600 defined space sectors. Ultimately, it is up to the Guardians to fully endorse a new recruit. In the case that a Lantern is killed in action, their ring is preprogrammed to fly back to Oa, the Corps homeworld. Within the Corps are two known sub-groups: the senior Green Lanterns and the Honor Guard. Only the most courageous and revered Lanterns can be inducted into the Guard. With the designation, they are not restricted to any one sector and are leaders within the Corps. Atrocitus, of the Five Inversions, predicted that there would be a war of light. The Green Lantern Corps would fall at the hands of the Sinestro Corps, a collection of the most vile murderers and deviants of the universe united under Sinestro.
