Deegan was a drill sergeant in the Green Lantern Corps and trained many recruits who would go on to become highly revered such as Kilowog and Tomar-Re. He subscribes to tough love and berates his cadets in order to weed out the weaker ones but retains a very strong fellowship with his students. Deegan often takes his classes to a unique planet with distinct climates, such as an active volcano, a harsh desert, and ice canyons. Deegan was could immediately see Kilowog's potential as he put his comrades' lives ahead of his own in each trial.
The night before the ice canyon trial, Kilowog challenged Deegan. Deegan reacted by defeating him in combat without his ring. Deegan reiterated he was teaching him that aging in the Corps was a privilege and they were expected to die so the innocent could live. Salakk, Deegan's superior, made an unexpected call and revealed the Khunds were invading Chiraka's capitol. Deegan and his class were the closest and immediately dispatched. Deegan fought Khundian forces alone and made a sucidal run that overloaded a powerful laser cannon. Near death, Deegan was about to get executed by a Khund but Kilowog intervened. Deegan's final lesson was sometimes a Lantern must fight with everything they have. With his final breath, Deegan took his blood and painted a Lantern symbol on Kilowog's chest. Kilowog rose up and became the Corps' latest drill sergeant.
