Hal Jordan followed in the footsteps of his father, Martin "The Flying Martini" Jordan as a test pilot for Ferris Aircraft. Jordan soon fell in love with his boss, Carol Ferris. Soon after, the Green Lantern known as Abin Sur crash landed on Earth with mortal wounds. Sur commanded his green power ring to seek out a man honest and fearless enough to succeed him. The ring found two candidates, Guy Gardner and Hal Jordan. Since Hal Jordan was closer in proximity, he was chosen. Sur offered parting words and informed him that the Guardians would send for him soon. Hal Jordan was trained by Kilowog. They warmed up to each other after three or four fights. Jordan also became introduced to Kilowog's left. Along with Kilowog, Jordan came to hold Sinestro and Laira in high regard.
Hal Jordan also took part in many battles and won against all odds, including fighting an army of Manhunters with Ch'p and helping neutralize the threat of Krona. During the return of Krona, Hal Jordan was assigned to mentor Arisia. With little time, Jordan told her tales of several Green Lanterns as they monitored for Krona's impending arrival. The first story he told was of Avra, the first Lantern, then of Kilowog, Laira, and Mogo.
