Laira Omoto was born on the planet Jayd and after a few years, was trained by her father Kentor Omoto in the martial arts. She was brought up on the values of discipline, tradition, and honor and became very adept at several styles of fighting. During a Khundian invasion, a Green Lantern fell and his ring chose Laira Omoto as the successor. She immediately broadcast a distress call that summoned several Lanterns, including Abin Sur, Sinestro, and Palaqua. Omoto accepted the higher calling and quickly became one of the fiercest Green Lanterns of all, even earning Hal Jordan's respect. It is rumored that she never looks at her enemies in combat to earn the element of surprise.
About a year before Krona's return, Omoto was dispatched to Jayd to investigate hostile acts from her father's group, the Golden Dragon. She hoped those responsible were Ree'Yu, Kentor's mistress, and Rubyn, Laira's sadistic brother. After defeating them, Omoto confronted her father and realized he, indeed, was the root cause of Jayd's hostility. Omoto defeated her father in combat, to his surprise. He regained his honor by ritual suicide. As Omoto departed, the Golden Dragon submitted to her authority.
