According to the Book of Oa, "The first one was given a ring was not the first Lantern. The first was Avra." Long ago, when chaos outbalanced creation and hate outbalanced fellowship, the Guardians of the Universe gathered the finest warriors of the universe. Among them, four would be chosen to wear the Green Power Rings. Avra, a chronicler of the Guardians, was present to record the event. Some called it an accident but the fourth ring chose Avra and so it would be, the rings chose their successors. The four were dispatched to neutralize an armada but quickly lost a comrade. Wachet, G'Hu, and Avra considered their options. Avra contended the rings were forged from will and they must will their survival. The others were not so faithful.
Avra set forth alone and used the ring to create the first construct, a giant sword. Wachet and G'Hu joined and the armada was vanquished. Avra claimed the title of the first Green Lantern and returned to Oa, no longer a scribe. He taught the new Green Lanterns how to create constructs but in time, he fell in battle and his ring was passed on to the next.
