In 1955, a radical scientist named Dr. Erdel based in Gotham City attempted to send and receive a deep space signal. Instead, he transported a Martian to Earth. Erdel suffered a fatal heart attack but managed to issue the Martian a warning. J'onn Jonzz decided his immediate concerns were survival and concealment. For some reason, Erdel's device damaged part of his consciousness and his memories of Mars were distorted. With the power of shapeshifting, Jonzz took on the appearance of Dr. Erdel and used the late doctor's television to learn about humans. Jonzz concluded that he wanted to be a force of good and took on the appearance of a tv police detective named John Jones.
If he hadn't, Jonzz wouldn't have eluded Argent for three years. As Jones, he joined the Gotham City Police Department and earned a reputation for being eccentric due to his interest in racism and UFO sightings. Rather than his "hunches" and "sources" that turned to be right, Jones was one of few honest cops in the force and earned the respect of fellow detective, Slam Bradley. In 1957, they followed a "source" to 14456 Paris Avenue, address of a Catholic Church. Five days ago, the son of a prominent financier was kidnapped. Once inside, Jones witnessed a cult fighting Batman. During the battle, a candle was knocked over causing a fire. Fire was the only weakness of Martians and is said to fill the soul with dread.
Batman approached Jones and "recruited" his aid. In the mean time, Jones would use his telepathy to "connect" with humans and experience their emotions in a collective area such as movie theaters. He could feel their fear of the unknown and hatred of things they can't control or understand. 18 months later, upon learning from Harry Lieter. of a secret Mars mission and the murder of John Henry, Jones decides to act and turns his back on Earth to risk death to get home to Mars. During prelaunch, King Faraday sighted Jonzz on the monitors and attempted to stop him. Rather than escape, Jonzz saved Faraday's life and ended up in a detention cell. Faraday was fascinated with Jonzz' decision. Jonzz revealed that Faraday's intentions and hopes and restored his own hope.
Faraday decided to offer Jonzz to help in the final stand against the Centre. The Centre's telepathic powers overwhelmed Jonzz in proximity and caused Faraday to let his guard down, to be wounded by a monster. Faraday managed to take two grenades and sacrificed himself. Jonzz was horrified and took back control of his mind and fought on. At the crux of the battle, Jonzz assured the Flash that he would execute his role and there'd be someone to help. Afterwards, Jonzz befriended Superman and joined the Justice League of America.
