As a young boy, Bruce Wayne witnessed the murder of his parents while they walked home from the movies. Wayne swore that he would avenge his parents. The Wayne family butler, Alfred Pennyworth and close family friend, Dr. Leslie Thompkins helped raise him. At age 14, he went on a world tour where he trained under martial artists, manhunters and escape artists and mastered every academic discipline he could. Some years later, Wayne returned to Gotham City and accepted his position as heir to Wayne Enterprises and built up a public persona as an industrialist, philanthropist and playboy. By night, he was the costumed figure, Batman. Besides his detective nature, Batman also was known for his Batarangs and utility belt which housed all sorts of weapons and tools. In time, it housed a $70,000 piece of Kryptonite (just in case). His headquarters, the Batcave, is located beneath stately Wayne Manor and houses the Batmobile and the Batplane and forefront technology.

Batman and Superman eventually crossed paths and learned each other's identities. They became allies and following the McCarthy hysteria, decided that one needed to remain on the outside and one, the inside. Together, they'd bid their time until the people and the government needed change. Batman earned a public image as a cunning and dangerous individual. A staged battle was conducted to exonerate Superman. Superman was gassed while Batman made his escape and continued to defend Gotham City.

In 1957, Batman infiltrated a Catholic church located on 14456 Paris Square. A cult had kidnapped the son of a local financier five days prior. Later, John Jones and Slam Bradley, from the Gotham City Police Department, arrived and joined the fight. The child was frightened by Batman's grim appearance and fighting style. Batman continued to investigate cases of mass delusion and violence, eventually receiving help from John Jones.

Batman also decided to tone down his appearance and adopted an orphaned Dick Grayson who went on to become his sidekick, Robin. Batman revealed his findings to Superman and deduced that a matter shrinking device invented by Ray Palmer would be the key to stopping the Centre. Following the victory, Batman became part of the Justice League of America.
