Walter Kronkite was born in Saint Joseph, Missouri on November 4, 1916. His family later moved to Houston, Texas. In 1935, Kronkite dropped out of college in his junior year started work as a media journalist. In order to protect radio stations from losing listeners, Kronkite took the name "Walter Wilcox." After joining the United Press in 1937, he became one of the most famous World War II correspondents.
In 1950, he was recruited by Edward Murrow to join the growing television division of CBS News. On July 7, 1952, he coined the term "anchor" while covering the Democratic and Republican Conventions. From 1953 to 1957, he hosted "You Are There" and "The Twentieth Century." The programs designed to highlight historical events. While revisiting the John Henry murder, the Flash stole the spotlight from Kronkite and issued his retirement.
