The Green Lantern Corps is an intergalactic military institution dedicated to retaining peace throughout the known universe. The Corps were founded by the Guardians of the Universe as successors to the Manhunters. A worthy protector is chosen to be a Green Lantern for each of the 3600 official Space Sectors. The next Green Lantern is chosen either by the Guardians or immediately if a ring detects a worthy successor nearby. An elite group of Green Lanterns are selected by the Guardians to join the Honor Guard and are no longer restricted to any one Space Sector.
Raw recruits are brought to Oa for training. However, the Guardian frontier is 18 months travel time from Oa. Contact is sporadic and Green Lanterns are instead given limited instruction by their ring only. The Red Lantern Corps swore righteous vengeance against the Green Lantern Corps and began killing Lanterns in Frontier Space. After the Guardians received intelligence on an impending invasion of Red Lanterns, they voted to deploy a large majority of the Green Lantern Corps to head them off.
After the Red Lantern incident, Hal Jordan and Guy Gardner were promoted to the Green Lantern Honor Guard. John Stewart, also from Earth, was selected to assume the role of Green Lantern of Space Sector 2814. Some time later, a large contingent of Green Lanterns were dispatched to Ranx to combat Manhunters attacking the planet's force field. Under Guy Gardner's command, the contingent's first offensive failed and a retreat was ordered. While a coordinated attack was initiated, Hal Jordan, Kilowog, and Razer was the sole squad to make to Ranx. The Green Lanterns soon encountered Aya and were soundly defeated. They returned to Oa and were dispatched to Maltus to fight what was believed to be a losing battle against Aya. While the Corps engaged the Ayahunters and Biot Drones, Hal Jordan and Razer convinced Aya to spare the universe. A celebration was held on Oa.
