Hal Jordan is a born leader and loves his role as a Green Lantern. He laughs in the face of danger and rushes headfirst into action. Jordan was taught by both Sergeant Kilowog and a highly regarded Lantern, Sinestro. In the Battle of Khund, Sinestro stole Jordan's thunder and destroyed 10 platoons singlehandedly after deviating from the battle plan. Years later, while testing a billion dollar fighter jet in the California Canyons, Jordan saved a train from destruction. However, the fighter jet crashed. An hour later, he returned to Ferris Aircraft and attempted to sweet talk Carol Ferris, his boss and girlfriend. Jordan's ring then activated and he was called to Oa on a priority one alert. Jordan was questioned by the Guardians of the Universe about his conduct at a recent peace negotiation. During Appa Ali Apsa's tirade, a power ring dropped into the Guardian chamber. Jordan demanded action be taken immediately. At Ganthet's suggestion, a break was taken. Ganthet then took the opportunity to show Jordan and Kilowog an experimental space ship called the Interceptor, exactly what they needed.

Hal Jordan and Kilowog took off with the Interceptor. In their haste, ultra-warp protocols were bypassed and they faced imminent death by unstable ultra warp field. Jordan took manual control and steered them into Frontier Space. The ship detected a fire fight and Jordan sprang into action with little power left in his ring. He rallied and charged his ring off the Interceptor's engine. He blew away the Red Lanterns and nearly his arm in the process. The Green Lanterns regrouped on Colony 12, home to the Lantern they just saved, Shyir Rev. However, it was under threat of destruction by the Red Lantern Corps. Jordan was handily beaten by Atrocitus, leader of the Red Lanterns, and watched in horror as Colony 12 exploded. Jordan defeat Razer but refused to kill him in retribution. Instead, he stripped Razer of his ring and imprisoned him on the Interceptor.

After a conference with the Guardians of the Universe, Hal was given orders to send Razer to a more permanent confinement. Razer was dropped off at a Spider Guild Prison but Jordan was convinced to return and covertly investigate. However, they were captured and prepared to be eaten. Razer saved Hal and Kilowog and helped fight off the Guild. Without his ring, Hal defeated Myglom, the warden. Once the Guild were all imprisoned, Hal gave Razer back his ring and announced he was coming with them. During a rescue operation, Jordan refused to abandon the Truvedon ship as it was stocked with the eggs of a near-extinct race. When things got even worse, he realized several creatures eating everything was really Aya's drones and allowed them to help restart the ship's engines. However, the ship was unable to reverse out of the Pinhole. Jordan then utilized his piloting skills to attempt a dangerous move. He flew with the Pinhole's current to generate enough velocity to slingshot the ship to safety.

Hal Jordan and Kilowog explored Betrassus in search of a Green Lantern to recruit to their cause. Instead, they became embroiled in a claim to the throne. Jordan ended up taking up the claim when the Green Lantern was murdered. While receiving some training from Queen Iolande, Jordan reassured her she was meant to be queen. He easily avoided an assassination attempt when his sled malfunctioned and exploded. During Jordan and Kothak's battle, Kilowog faked his own death to draw out the true murderer. It was Prince Ragnar. He soon fled with Iolande with Jordan, Kilowog, and Kothak in hot pursuit. Jordan speculated Dulok's ring chose Iolande, the next worthy to bear it, and instructed her to wear it. She complied and became a Green Lantern then defeated Ragnar. Iolande relented she needed to stay on Betrassus for the people and kissed Jordan goodbye. Jordan was unexpectedly reunited with Ferris, now a Star Sapphire, on Zamaron. Due to a misunderstanding, she attacked him and Ghia'ta. Luckily, the true love between them aided Jordan in resolving the conflict.

Hal Jordan's outfit managed to successfully destroy the Lighthouse on Appa's orders but were stranded near the Maelstrom after Atrocitus stole the Interceptor. Jordan decided to go to Zamaron and try to convince Queen Aga'po to generate a portal to Earth. Despite the risk of spatial displacement, Jordan went through and suffered some amnesia. Namely, he didn't remember he was a Green Lantern. Carol Ferris led him to his foot locker and restored his memories with Jordan's personal power battery. After he and Ferris embraced, Jordan set off for Oa and confronted Atrocitus. Jordan admitted Atrocitus was right and offered a peaceful solution. Atrocitus rejected the offer and the two fought. On willpower alone, Jordan was able to defeat Atrocitus and render him unconscious. Before he could be debriefed, Jordan returned to Earth to finish his date with Ferris.

Hal Jordan's return to Earth was not the homecoming he expected. For being absent for months and presumed dead by the authorities, Jordan was naturally fired from Ferris Aircraft. To add insult to injury, he soon discovered another Green Lantern had taken his place in Space Sector 2814, Guy Gardner. He confided his secret identity to Gardner and the two seemed to get along. Soon enough, Jordan became impatient and fought Gardner. They broke off to investigate an ancient tomb and encountered three active Manhunters. Jordan and Gardner were able to destroy them before they reached a nearby town. Jordan's bad day wasn't over yet, however. Carol Ferris broke up with him over the phone and asserted he needed to live the life he was meant for. When Gardner asked for Ferris' phone number, Jordan punched him out. He was soon summoned back to Oa. Instead of being stripped of his power ring, Jordan learned he was promoted to the Green Lantern Honor Guard.

After completing a week of work with the Honor Guard, Jordan went on patrol with Tomar-Re in his assigned sector. They discovered another Manhunter bunker and retreated. During an audience with the Guardians, Jordan voiced his opinion that an outside force was manipulating the Manhunters. Thanks in part to Tomar-Re's report, Jordan was given the orders to form a small team to map out Manhunter Bunkers and allowed use of the Interceptor. Jordan attempted to get 'the band' together again starting with Kilowog. After a humiliating defeat at the hands of a recruit named Ch'p, Jordan was surprised when Kilowog announced he agreed to come along. Jordan and Kilowog then flew to the Science Branch and saved Aya from dissection. With Tomar-Re, the trio flew to Biot to investigate the source of the pulse that activated the Manhunters. They soon encountered the Anti-Monitor but were forced to retreat. Jordan attempted to shield the others as they boarded the Interceptor. However, he was caught in the Anti-Monitor's blast and vanished.

Hal Jordan was shot into a parallel universe and landed on a planet not unlike an industrial Victorian-era London. As he wandered around, Jordan encountered Lady Catherine and Steam Lantern. After helping them fight off Mechanoids, he followed them to their blimp the Battlin' Berthilda. After comparing notes, Jordan realized the Anti-Monitor was from this universe and Steam Lantern had what it took to be a hero for his people. They tried to reopen the rift but were halted by Duke Nigel. Once Nigel acquiesced to his mistakes, he helped the trio reopen the rift with his ray. Jordan used the last of his power ring's energy to transport the entire planet to his home dimension. Jordan fell to his doom and lost consciousness but was saved by the Steam Lantern. He decided to finally try some tea with Lady Catherine and Steam Lantern until Kilowog, Aya, and Tomar-Re found him. After Aya destroyed the Anti-Monitor and assumed control of the Manhunters, Jordan still believed she could be saved after all the countless times she saved him.

As usual, Hal Jordan disagreed with the notion of letting the Guardians decide what to do with Aya. But the crew needed a weapon to hold Aya at bay while they tried to save her. Razer suggested the Orange Light and after hearing the legend, Jordan was willing to search for it. Jordan came upon a cavern and discovered the Orange Power Battery and Larfleeze. He was overcame by the battery's strong influence and stole the battery. He outran and destroyed Larfleeze's constructs and returned to the Interceptor. However, the battery's influence drove Jordan insane and transformed him into an Orange Lantern. Jordan returned to Larfleeze's home and stole it for himself. Kilowog, Razer, and Larfleeze teamed up to get what they each wanted. Jordan was too powerful to defeat in combat so Kilowog and Razer reasoned with him to get back on the mission to stop Aya. Jordan managed to overcome the battery's influence and reverted back to normal.

Hal Jordan began to receive a weird signal but any response was in static. Soon enough, Jordan and his team were routed to Ranx by Appa Ali Apsa and granted the use of any force necessary to stop Aya. Jordan was less than pleased to learn Gardner was promoted to Honor Guard. Gardner's snide remarks didn't help either. Jordan eventually realized the signal was being sent by someone on Ranx. He was surprised to learn it was the Anti-Monitor, who sought out protection from Aya and the Manhunters. Jordan surprisingly agreed to on the premise the Anti-Monitor was still injured and not in any state to devour galaxies like Aya. However, they were too late and Aya placed them in stasis fields while she took the Time-Displacement Cylinder from the Anti-Monitor's shell. Back on Oa, Jordan realized all the sectors absorbed by Aya were uninhabited.

At the Maltus battle, Jordan confronted Aya with his newfond knowledge. Aya took Jordan with her to witness the end of the universe and beginning of a new one. Jordan replayed footage of Scar explaining Aya's true origins. Aya claimed to be unswayed and reiterated she was making the decision out of cold reason. Jordan watched as Razer didn't go through with destroying Aya and suffered a fatal blow. Jordan convinced Aya to heal him. She took both back to the present before the Big Bang swallowed them up. After Aya sacrificed herself to stop the Ayahunters, the Green Lantern Corps returned to Oa to celebrate. Jordan and Kilowog sought out Razer to join in the festivities but he announced he was leaving to look for Aya. Jordan pledged their aid if Razer ever needed it. Razer countered he already saved him and said his goodbyes to the pair. Jordan believed of all the people, Razer had a shot at finding Aya.
