Thaal Sinestro was chosen to be the Green Lantern of Space Sector 1417. He became a legend in the Corps and one of the most decorated senior Green Lanterns ever. However, others such as Kilowog believed Sinestro was an undisciplined hothead who bends the rules to what suits him on any given day. In the Battle of Khund, Sinestro messed up the battle plan but went on to be commended for taking down 10 platoons by himself. At one point, he took Hal Jordan under his wing and taught Jordan some of his tricks.
After the near invasion of Guardian Space by the Red Lanterns, the Guardians assigned Sinestro to infiltrate a Spider Guild Frigate and extract a deadly assassin named Neuroxsis. Sinesto succeeded and also confiscated Spider Guild weapons but became pinned down aboard the frigate by heavy fire. He managed to hail the Interceptor crew for an assist. They met up near the starboard tower and were about to leave but Neuroxsis possessed the Guild captain and activated the frigate's self-destruct sequence. Once onboard the Interceptor, Neuroxsis possessed Sinestro. After sabotaging the power couplings, Sinestro tried to kill everyone but Razer knocked him out. The crew decided to remove Sinestro's ring and keep him in the Sciencell.
Sinestro regained consciousness but had short term memory loss. He deduced Neuroxsis' powers and escaped through the venting system. Sinestro took his ring back and formed a plan with Aya to depressurize the ship of oxygen. Since Neuroxsis lacked the ability to operate a power ring and generate a power field, he could be forced to go back to his body in the Sciencell. The plan worked but Sinestro left the Sciencell unsealed and watched Neuroxsis die. He told the crew it was an accident and his body must have suffocated while they tried to force the assassin out. Sinestro mused it was probably for the best since it was too dangerous to keep Neuroxsis imprisoned on Oa.
