The Teen Titans East, nicknamed the Titans East, was formed as a result for the search and capture of Brother Blood. After Aqualad and Bumblebee tracked Blood to Steel City, they set up the infrastructure for a new Tower into a cliff face and recruited Mas y Menos and Speedy to join their cause. However, to complete the Tower, they required Cyborg's presence. He set up their security system and put some finishing touches which included a disco ball. After their maiden mission against a brainwashed Steamroller, the Titans elected Cyborg for leadership. The celebration came to a halt when H.I.V.E. invaded. Brother Blood took control of the team and planned to use Cyborg's technology to take control of a new class of students. The original Teen Titans defeated Blood and helped restore the Tower. Cyborg concluded he would stay with the Titans and nominated Bumblebee to be the leader of the Titans East.
Over a year later, the Teen Titans dedicated their time to recruit other heroes across the world. However, the trouble-prone Jump City was their top concern. The Titans East agreed to look after the city. Bumblebee was resolute in protecting the city rather than trying to get recognition from the public. They encountered Control Freak, fresh out of prison, who designed the Ultimate Titans Challenge to test the original Titans' specific skills and stamina with counter-technology weapons. With no other choice than to accept, the Titans East proved themself and captured an impressed Control Freak.
