Garth was the son of an exiled pacifist, abandoned in the sea. However, he was found and adopted by Aquaman, King of Atlantis. As Aqualad, Garth established himself as a great warrior and patrolled the ocean in service of the kingdom. Aqualad kept one of Atlantis' tenants close to his heart, to keep a low profile. Aside from his friend, Tramm, Aqualad was a loner who hunted down the worst of Atlantis' criminals such as Trident. However, some time later, he encountered the Teen Titans while investigating a lead on Trident. At Robin's behest, Aqualad and Beast Boy teamed up to find and stop Trident before he could move forward with his plans.

At the end of the mission, the Teen Titans welcomed Aqualad to their island, bestowed him a Titans Communicator, and inducted him to the Titans as an honorary member. With similar powers, he and Beast Boy developed a friendly rivalry along the way and came to respect each other. Months later, he would be reunited with the Titans when the Master of Games summoned him to the Tournament of Heroes in an alternate dimension. Aqualad was defeated in his first match against Speedy who utilized his energy arrows, including a cyrogenic one.

Not long after, while on patrol in the Titans-designated Sector 7, the Pacific Ocean, Aqualad discovered an undersea H.I.V.E. fortress 50 miles offshore of Jump City. Brother Blood neutralized Aqualad's telepathic powers and defeated him. However, Aqualad managed to gather some intelligence from an undercover agent within the base. He returned to the Titans Tower and presented his findings. Together, they teamed up and formed a three pronged plan to defeat Blood. Beast Boy and Aqualad were to team up and shut down the force field generator protecting the fortress' primary weapon, a sonic resonator. The base was destroyed but Blood escaped. Aqualad and the undercover agent, Bumblebee, pursued him east. They chased him to Steel City where an eastern Titans branch was then set up.

Cyborg later arrived to help the team finish with the Tower. To accomodate Aqualad and the Tower's various vehicles, the Tower was located near the East River. The main hall includes an 18 foot deep swimming pool, as well. However, the Titans East were soon placed under Brother Blood's mind control. Cyborg and the rest of the Teen Titans fought back and restored everyone to normal upon defeating Blood once and for all. Everyone in Titans East agreed that Cyborg should be their leader but he declined and nominated Bumblebee, instead. They elected to make Steel City their permanent base of operations.

When the Teen Titans journeyed across the world to fight the Brotherhood of Evil and warn other super heroes, the Titans East agreed to patrol Jump City in their absence. The team encountered Control Freak and took on his Ultimate Titans Challenge. Aqualad was faced with saving the city water supply from pollution and outswimming a mechanical shark named Glen. He took care of both problems simultaneously and jammed the pipe carrying sewage with Glen. Shortly there after, the Brotherhood initiated the final phase of their plan and attacked every hero at once. In Sector 7, Aqualad was ambushed by Plasmus and Trident while Tramm was defeated by XL Terrestrial. They were subdued and brought back to Paris and cyrogenically frozen by Professor Chang. However, all of the Titans were saved and defeated the Brotherhood an epic battle.
