When Roy Harper was only a baby, his father, Will died. Will Harper was a forest ranger and died while saving Navajo medicine chief named Brave Bow from a blazing wildfire. Brave Bow honored him and raised Roy. Harper soon excelled in sports, long distance running and archery. Harper idolized the super hero, Green Arrow.
Green Arrow happened to be in Roy's home town and was impressed when Roy quickly stopped an attempted robbery. Green Arrow nicknamed him "Speedy." Brave Bow died soon after and Harper was adopted by Oliver Queen. Harper soon learned his secret and became the teenage partner of Green Arrow, Speedy. Speedy established himself as one of the world's top archers and struck out on his own. He continued to use an arsenal of energy arrows and perfected it with a prototype accelerator. As Speedy became more and more experienced, he reveled in being the best.
Speedy encountered the Teen Titans when he was transported to an alternate dimension by the Master of Games. He immediately struck up a camaraderie with Robin. In the first round of battle, Speedy defeated Aqualad with a cryogenic arrow. In the third round, he and Robin teamed up to beat Wildebeest but were bested by Robin after his bow was shattered. After the heroes defeated the Master, Speedy was made an honorary Titan and given a communicator.
Speedy was later recruited by Bumblebee and Aqualad to the Titans East in Steel City. He and the rest of the team were placed under Brother Blood's mind control and were slated to be his test subjects. However, Cyborg and the Teen Titans saved them and defeated Blood once and for all.
Months later, as the Titans travelled across the world, Titans East agreed to patrol Jump City in their absence. The team was challenged by Control Freak. However, they easily overcame his counter-technologies weapons. Speedy destroyed a sensory detector meant for Robin. However, when Control Freak returned with a new challenge, Speedy was faced with saving the Bay Bridge from a missile, without any arrows. Undaunted, Speedy used himself as an arrow and saved the innocent bystanders on the bridge.
Soon after taking part in a worldwide Titans communicator test, Speedy was called away to Sector 11. He fought Cheshire but was defeated and captured. As Robin was brought to the Brotherhood, Speedy was cryogenically frozen by Professor Chang. However, several Titans avoided capture and staged a final battle in Paris, at the Brotherhood of Evil's secret base.
