The Green Lantern Corps is an elite intergalactic force led by the immortal Guardians of the Universe. Its mandate is to enforce law and order. Considered a privileged organization, only those with the best reputation are chosen to patrol the 3600 defined space sectors. Ultimately, it is up to the Guardians to fully endorse a new recruit. In the case that a Lantern is killed in action, their ring is preprogrammed to fly back to Oa, the Corps homeworld. Within the Corps are two known sub-groups: the senior Green Lanterns and the Honor Guard. Only the most courageous and revered Lanterns can be inducted into the Guard. With the designation, they are not restricted to any one sector and are leaders within the Corps.
Sinestro soon came to believe that the Corps grew weak under the leadership of the Guardians and nearly destroyed it with the Yellow Element. Although many were killed while in space, the Corps replenished its ranks and rebuilt thanks to the efforts of Hal Jordan.
