Abin Sur was originally a family man and a professor of history on his home planet of Ungara. Some time in the 1860's, he succeeded Waverly Sayre as Green Lantern of Space Sector 2814. Since then, Sur became one of the most senior of Lanterns and the most loved.
When word reached the Guardians of the Universe that Kanjar Ro stole the Yellow Element, they called an emergency meeting with the senior Lanterns, Abin Sur, Kilowog, Tomar Re, and Sinestro. Sur volunteered to go undercover and infiltrated Kanjar Ro's ship. He was unable to locate the Element and was about to report his findings when he was attacked by one of Ro's enforcers, Cuch. Sinestro sold him out secretly. Mortally wounded, Sur managed to escape and fled to Earth.
Sur crash landed in the California desert near Ferris Aircraft. Near death, he ordered his ring to find a replacement, someone with the courage of conviction despite the personal costs. That someone was Hal Jordan. After passing his ring and explaining what would happen next, his ship exploded and his body was vaporized. Many in the Corps mourned his loss and were not quick to embrace his successor, Jordan.
