Decades ago, the Wayne Family participated in the Underground Railroad and aided slaves who fled their masters in the South. Bruce Wayne discovered the underground passages beneath Wayne Manor when he fell through a rustic well on the estate.
After becoming Batman, he decided to use the caverns as his inner sanctum. At first he stored basic equipment but as his war on crime became more sophisticated, his cave became more outfitted. By turning the hands on his grandfather clock to 10:47, the time his parents were murdered, he could gain access from the Manor's study. A second entrance was situated behind a waterfall when Batman left in his Batmobile or Batplane. Dubbed the Batcave, it also housed the most forefront computer system at the time. It's location was a guarded secret only known to his extended family and closest allies, all including Robin and Superman.
