Thousands of years ago, the creators of the Green Lantern Corps, the Guardians of the Universe containted most of the universe's magical energies into an orb they called the Starheart.
In the 1940's, Scott discovered a piece of the Starheart and gained a power ring and Green Lantern. Due to its age, the ring was only powerless against wood. As the Green Lantern, he helped found the Justice Society of America.
