In October 1940, a search went out for a suitable location for an aerial gunnery school. The state of Nevada leased an airstrip to the Army Air Corps. The base ranged from 3000 to 45000 occupants. The gunnery school was deactivated in 1945 but was quickly reactivated in 1948 to prepare pilots for the Korean War. It was renamed Nellis Air Force Base on April 30, 1950.
In 1957, Colonel Ace Morgan was ordered to fly a B-47 prototype and fly cross country with three passengers for a cross country television stunt out of Nellis. It became infamous for top secret activity such as other facilities like Area 51.
