In the 1950's, Colonel "Ace" Morgan, of the USAAF, was recruited to take part in a television stunt. He would fly a B-47 prototype out of Nellis Air Force Base and pick up three other stars in a cross-country flight: Matthew "Red" Ryan, Professor Walter Haley and Leslie "Rocky" Davis.

Red Ryan is "America's Greatest Daredevil" and known for his skill and sheer nerve. Professor Haley is an ex-US Navy frogman (military personnel who dive or are trained to dive in a military capacity, often in Navy special operations)and holds degrees in Aeronautics and Oceanography. Rocky Davis was first known for his decathalon victory in 1950 and went onto become America's favorite sports personality and business tycoon.

In mid-flight, the plane crashes in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. The four magange to survive. In 1957, all four are mysteriously drawn back to the scene of the crash. They strike a pact to become adventurers together and challenge the unknown with what's left of their borrowed time.

The Challengers of the Unknown were born. Their motto is, "Wherever mankind is threatened by forces beyond its control, the Challengers will be there." They became a paramilitary branch with loose ties to the Pentagon and helped fill the void left by retired super heroes and handled many domestic emergencies. They were well received after being introduced to the public via Movietone Newsreel, a weekly staple in movie theaters nationwide.

Kurtzberg, a reclusive genius, was the arcitect that designed their headquarters, Challenger Mountain. A fifth member, June Robbins (a computer genius), was later added. The Challengers joined in the final stand against the Centre.
