In the 1960s, a little under two dozen young idealists came together and lived on a commune, called The Farm, a hundred miles north of New York City. The people in the nearby town mockingly called them "The Hairies." The youths adopted the name as a badge of honor. Led by Guitar Joe and Doctor Psycho, the Hairies rallied behind a vision of the future where people of all races would be equal. Despite the message of equality, the women Hairies all assumed traditional roles called "Earth Mothers" whose primary function was to cook, clean, and pleasure their men. Psycho worked in his sophisticated lab to concot "pure" elixirs to help expand human consciousness. Hairies volunteered but the experimental drugs turned them into feral creatures.
In May 1967, Bekka was invited to join the Hairies after she saved Suzie Sunshine from a bad acid trip. Bekka developed an affection for Joe but disagreed with the group's ideologies such as the "Earth Mother" roles and using drugs. Some Hairies began to follow suit and looked to Bekka for guidance. Using crystals made by Mother Box, Bekka showed them how to expand their consciousness without drugs. They could see the boundaries of the universe through the window of their own souls. More Hairies started to join Bekka's group. Soon a divide opened up between Bekka and Joe's groups. The last straw was in 1968 when Psycho dosed Bekka after she found the people Psycho locked away.
A large group left The Farm with Bekka and founded a new commune named New New Genesis. A small group was still loyal to Joe and Psycho. Psycho used one of Mother Box's crystals to transform his burnouts into winged creatures and sent them after New New Genesis. Bekka sensed the crystal in Joe's chest and used her heart-connection to him and his to everyone to heal everyone and bring them to a state of union and sacredness beyond words. Joe led Bekka and the Hairies to Psycho's cave lab but it was long cleared out. After finding several corpses, Bekka decided to leave the Hairies and rejoin the world. She declared they would always be in her heart. Over 45 years later, Batman went to six cities and interrogated former Hairies who were still alive and learned the real Jackson Alpert was dead and his identity was taken by Doctor Psycho.
