Guitar Joe is the leader of the Hairies, a group of young idealists living on a commune a hundred miles north of New York City called The Farm. Joe had a vision of the future where people of all races would be equal. One where hearts and minds across the globe would be one. In May 1967, Guitar Joe, Docotor Psycho, and Suzie Sunshine went to a concert in New York City. Joe and Psycho looked all over for Suzie after she suffered a bad acid trip and ran off. They found her in an alley with Bekka, who healed her. They went for cheap coffee and talked for four hours. Bekka didn't think Joe's high ideals were enough to traverse the gulfs between a dream and its manifestation. Joe thought the Hairies could use someone like Bekka and invited her to The Farm. Joe could sense Bekka was running from something and hoped she could find peace with them.
Despite his rule, Joe took Bekka into Psycho's lab without permission. She didn't think much of his goal to use drugs to expand human consciousness. Bekka soon used her super strength to lift the Hairies' van out of a ditch. Her feat caught everyone off guard. Psycho knew Joe would have some competition. Soon enough, a divide formed between Joe's group and Bekka's. Joe and Psycho found Bekka in the lab basement fighting off the burnouts who volunteered for the latter's experiments. Joe tried to defend the secret and insisted Psycho was onto something great. Bekka didn't agree and Psycho dosed her with one of his elixirs. Suzie Sunshine helped Bekka recover from the hallucination. A small group of Hairies remained loyal to Joe and Psycho and stayed behind when most left with Bekka. A few months later, Joe finally realized Psycho wasn't in it to help people nor did he care about hurting his test subjects. Psycho knocked Joe out with a wrench.
Since Joe was a leader to everyone, Psycho added him to the experiment. He transformed Joe and the burnouts into winged monsters using a crystal made by Mother Box. He embedded the crystal into Joe's chest and released the burnouts to kill Bekka. Over an hour later, Bekka recognized Joe. As he beat her relentlessly, Bekka saw the crystal and touched it. Bekka and Joe's heart connection and his to the others was utilized. Everyone was restored to humans and they were brought to a place of union and sacredness beyond words. Joe led Bekka and the Hairies to the cave Psycho was using but he was long gone. Bekka discovered the bodies of some test subjects that didn't survive. To ease his and her guilt, Joe mused more would have died if not for her. Bekka concluded she couldn't stay with the Hairies and departed to rejoin the world.
