Harold Goldblum was a top mind in biology, botany, and toxicology, specializing in man-made pandemic terrorist attacks like Anthrax, Ebola, and flesh-eating bacteria. He was a Professor of Chemistry at Metropolis University, spent 15 years heading up GothCorp Chemicals' Research & Development division, and was currently working for the NSA, specializing in biological warfare. Goldblum was kidnapped from his apartment by Poison Ivy and Floronic Man. A.R.G.U.S. placed a total media lockdown on Goldblum's kidnapping. The forensics team went over the crime scene a dozen times and found no clues. Goldblum was subjected to Ivy's hypnotic kiss and ordered to help them with figuring out a plan to turn the human race into animal/plant hybrids in a bid to save the planet from destruction. To keep him subservient, Ivy had to kiss him every six hours. Two days later, they broke into the S.T.A.R. Labs Gotham City branch and copied files related to Alec Holland's Bio-Restorative Formula.
In search of more information about Goldblum, Batman went to the Gotham branch of A.R.G.U.S. and met with Sarge Steel. He inquired about Goldblum. Steel's prosthetic hand malfunctioned and smashed his coffee mug. He yelled for Henderson then asked Batman how he even knew about Goldblum's kidnapping. Batman hinted he had eyes and ears everywhere. Steel reminded him hacking the A.R.G.U.S. computers was a federal crime. Batman started listing Goldblum's resume, while Henderson cleaned up, then asked what he was working on. Steel stated that was classified and his hands were tied. Batman keyed on how he put it and recalled a fringe hacker group recently accessed information about key A.R.G.U.S. employees and some of them seemed to be engaged in "questionable nocturnal activities." Steel was aghast at being blackmailed. Batman stated he was explaining that he could help stop a crime in exchange for some information. He handed Batman Goldblum's dossier.
Steel admitted it was an odd case because there was nothing, no ransom demands or political requests. He speculated Goldblum was killed or kept alive for reasons unknown. Batman asked if there were any leads. Steel admitted the investigation hit a dead end but pointed out Goldblum's field of expertise was man-made pandemic terrorist attacks and that he was the world's leading expert on the subject. Steel admitted a part of him hoped Goldblum's kidnappers killed him. Batman and Sarge Steel entered Goldblum's apartment. Steel was skeptical he would find anything since his best people went over it a dozen times already. Batman stated his best people weren't him. He looked at the leaves on the floor near a pot and picked one out. Steel became sarcastic. He didn't follow until Batman alluded to it being from Floronic Man. Ivy finished kissing Goldblum again, to Floronic Man's disgust. He felt torture was a better method. Goldblum went to work on recreating the Bio-Restorative Formula.
Goldblum tested it on a white mouse. It appeared to be a stable mutation but the mouse imploded. Goldblum recorded it as "subject response negative." Floronic Man accused him of faking and not even trying. Ivy stated he was still under her control and ordered Goldblum to tell them what went wrong. Goldblum asserted the formula was a complex azeotrope and while the virus conversion of it worked perfectly on paper but there was literally millions of variables that could be corrupting the process. He suspected the problem was they were using water from nearby Slaughter Swamp when they needed the precise bio-nutrients and chemicals from the water where the Swamp Thing was created, Weinwright Swamp in Louisiana. Floronic Man realized it was the perfect plan to deploy the virus since it fed directly into the Gulf of Mexico then the gulf stream currents would carry it into the greater Atlantic Ocean. Batman, Nightwing, and Harley Quinn invaded the hideout and a fight followed.
After a fire started, Ivy and Floronic Man prepared to flee the scene. Goldblum suddenly returned to normal but was confused. Before Ivy could hypnotize him again, Floronic Man chose the easier solution. He extended an arm and stabbed Goldblum in the heart. After the ceiling collapsed, Batman and Nightwing found Harley consoling Goldblum. Nightwing reached to pull the remnant out of Goldblum but Batman stopped him and injected something into his left leg. Batman told Harley to lift his head up. With his last breaths, Goldblum told them Ivy and Floronic Man needed swamp water in Louisiana to complete the process. Nightwing knew they were losing him. Harley told Goldblum he did good and they would handle it. She suggested he look up her grandmother Fran Quinzel when he got to Heaven. She thought they would really hit it off. Goldblum died. Harley laid his head down and closed his eyes.
