Batman is the legendary defender of Gotham City and a member of the Justice League. The Joker planned to unleash his Killer Hot Sauce on the Gotham City Barbecue Festival and poison everyone in attendance. Late Thursday evening, Joker's Ha-Ha Hideout, a warehouse on the outskirts of Gotham, was invaded by Batman and Nightwing after Harley tipped with off with a hot-air balloon. Joker was unaware Harley sabotaged his arsenal for the attention. The Mecha-Joker robot slipped on some sauce and Batman invoked maneuver #314 after he realized the henchmen were in the Mecha-Joker's path. Joker headed to the roof for his hot-air balloon but it drifted off. Unmoved by Harley's admission, Joker recalled his experimental rocket hat but Batman punched him out. Harley couldn't believe Joker wasn't even mad at her and only threatened revenge on Batman. She kicked him in the crotch and declared she was going solo. Poison Ivy arrived to rescue Harley from Joker but was fine with taking on Batman and the police instead.

Ivy and Harley were carried off by the arboreal network while Batman and Nightwing tried to get free of the vines. Batman had a hunch Harley would try and finish the Joker's interrupted plans for the festival as payback. Instead, Condiment King was robbing people at the Gotham City Barbecue Festival. Batman tackled him into the salad bar as his pineapple grenade blew up a bull statue. Nightwing had enough and hit him with an uppercut. Condiment King persisted with a Worcester sauce pun and got back handed. Nightwing believed Harley was used to being junior partner and was going along with Ivy's plan. Harley took her Whoopee Glider up to Catwoman's penthouse and tried to raid her jewelry collection but Catwoman caught her red handed. They got into a scrap until Batman and Nightwing arrived. Harley made her escape on the glider. Catwoman wouldn't reveal what Harley had in her bag. Batman rejected her flirtations and pointed out he could tip the police off since she was on parole and an escaped felon was in her penthouse. She was amused.

Nightwing had a hard time understanding why Batman was so keen on capturing Harley. Batman stated she was an unpredictable agent of destruction loose in his city and he wouldn't allow that to continue. They stopped to take down some thieves. They dropped the thieves off at the ninth precinct on the way home then retired to the Batcave to figure out Harley's next move. Doug made his way back to his apartment Monday night bruised from a skirmish at the Iceberg Lounge only to find Batman and Nightwing waiting. Batman noticed his left eye was swollen shut. Doug lied and said he walked into a door. Nightwing pointed out everyone talked and no one tried to protect him. He asked about Harley. Doug jumped out a window and ran off, unaware Batman slipped a tracer on him. Harley realized she was in the passenger seat of every relationship she got into. Ivy insisted she was the only one of them she cared about. Harley was troubled Ivy didn't identify as a human, too, and ran off. She bumped into Doug, who was sure he lost Batman and Nightwing on Novick Street.

Batman and Nightwing were perched atop a gargoyle and noted he stopped half a mile away. Batman wanted them to wait one more minute to be sure but Harley suddenly called out to them and led them right into the hothouse so Ivy could get the help she needed. Ivy sent her plants after them but was angered at them slashing and burning them up. Ivy threatened to snap Nightwing's neck but Harley tackled her. She told Ivy to her face she was losing her humanity more and more each day and was afraid she going to do something crazy she couldn't come back from. Ivy wasn't having it and hated her need for human chaos. Harley didn't know what else to do and cried. Ivy vowed that was tears wouldn't save her life ever again then she rode away on a giant vine. Harley turned herself over to Batman and Nightwing and found it funny that was the only relationship she could count on. Before Harley could ask, Batman promised he would get Ivy some help once she was caught. At some point, Batman helped A.R.G.U.S. fight the League of Assassins in Nanda Parbat.

A year and some months later, the Gotham City Police Department, Batman, and Nightwing investigated the scene of the crime at S.T.A.R. Labs while paramedics treated the surviving guards. The project supervisor confirmed nothing was physically stolen. Batman already deduced it since there was no effort to minimize collateral. Nightwing checked the computer Ivy used. The supervisor didn't believe Ivy could have accessed S.T.A.R. Labs' secure date but Nightwing found the file they copied. The supervisor became concerned. Nightwing knew the name "Holland" was familiar but couldn't place it. Batman typed and talked about Alec Holland's project to turn deserts into forests as a video of his demise was played. A guard mistook Swamp Thing for Floronic Man. Batman replayed the security footage and identified him. Nightwing wasn't thrilled with the team up. Batman excused them and they went outside to outline their two immediate objectives, figure out Ivy and Floronic Man's plan and find their location.

Batman knew what "tree" to shake to get more information about a kidnapped man named Harold Goldblum. He went to the Gotham branch of A.R.G.U.S. and met with Sarge Steel. Steel thanked him for his assistance against the League of Assasins. He inquired about Goldblum. Steel's prosthetic hand malfunctioned and smashed his coffee mug. He yelled for Henderson then asked Batman how he even knew about Goldblum's kidnapping. Batman hinted he had eyes and ears everywhere. Steel reminded him hacking the A.R.G.U.S. computers was a federal crime. Batman started listing Goldblum's resume, while Henderson cleaned up, then asked what he was working on. Steel stated that was classified and his hands were tied. Batman keyed on how he put it and recalled a fringe hacker group recently accessed information about key A.R.G.U.S. employees and some of them seemed to be engaged in "questionable nocturnal activities." Steel was aghast at being blackmailed. Batman stated he was explaining that he could help stop a crime in exchange for some information.

Steel stated for the record that what Mistress Ilsa did for him was considered therapy in some countries then handed Batman Goldblum's dossier. Steel admitted it was an odd case because there was nothing, no ransom demands or political requests. He speculated Goldblum was killed or kept alive for reasons unknown. Batman asked if there were any leads. Steel admitted the investigation hit a dead end but pointed out Goldblum's field of expertise was man-made pandemic terrorist attacks and that he was the world's leading expert on the subject. Steel admitted a part of him hoped Goldblum's kidnappers killed him. Batman and Sarge Steel entered Goldblum's apartment. Steel was skeptical he would find anything since his team went over it a dozen times already. Batman looked at the leaves on the floor near a pot and picked one out. Steel didn't follow until Batman alluded to it being from Floronic Man. Batman became concerned Nightwing wasn't checking in and followed the signal from his tracer. He heard Quinzel laughing and prepared to kick the door in but Nightwing started laughing, too. He opened the door and saw them tickling each other.

Quinzel, now dressed as Harley Quinn stood at attention. Batman noticed her underwear and dirty uniform on the floor as well as broken restraints on the bed. Harley went to the Batmobile. Batman asked Nightwing if he got what he needed. Nightwing grumbled it wasn't like he never made out with a supervillain. Harley attempted to bargain her help for a promise to let her to try and talk down Ivy first and help with the parole board. Batman refused to make deal with a psychopath. Harley was annoyed and stated the correct term was sociopath. She didn't take kindly to Nightwing trying to show her how to get into the Batmobile. Batman deduced Ivy and Floronic Man were going to convert the formula that turned Holland into Swamp Thing into a fast-acting virus then save humanity by turning it into animal/plant hybirds but was more alarmed that if the virus was mis-prepared, it would simply kill everyone on the planet.

Harley believed the best way to find Ivy was through Doug, or Shrubby, but she got distracted after she spotted a high school flame named Bobby Liebowitz and chased him through the streets and across rooftops for standing her up at senior prom 10 years ago. Batman warned her he wouldn't hesitate to dump her at a police station if she pulled another stupid stunt like that again and reminded her they weren't playing a game. Harley was offended and reminded him she was the answer to his prayers. She directed him to take the Donnenfeld Expressway to Bludhaven. Batman looked at Nightwing, who shrugged. Batman turned right and took the Expressway. At some point after the 15 mile marker to Bludhaven, Harley Quinn had stomach problems from the Hawkgirl Spicy Wings she ate at Superbabes but Batman didn't pull over. She farted. Nightwing was overcome but Batman refused to cave in. She farted again. Nightwing begged him. Batman finally pulled over to a Gotham Gas station. Harley strutted to the restroom.

Nightwing offered Batman ten dollars to floor it and not look back. They stopped at a dive bar. Harley assured them it looked like and was a total dump but claimed all the cool hench-people hung out there. A who's who of henchmen were inside. Nightwing became uneasy and likened it to nightmares he has. He wasn't sure they were welcome. Harley downplayed the stares and advised to look less like they had a stick up their asses. Catwoman's henchmen ordered a glass of milk for Batman as a prank and snickered. Harley walked to Batman and Nightwing and informed them she had to do something for Shrubby or there was no deal. Harley took the stage and sang Blondie's "Hanging on the Telephone." Even Batman tapped to her singing then stopped when Nightwing noticed. One of Catwoman's henchmen mocked Batman with the Batusi dance and was backhanded. The other henchman was about to act but Rhino stopped him. Nightwing took to dancing with a woman. Once Harley was finished, Shrubby wrote the location of Ivy's hideout on a matchbook. She thanked him and kissed him on the cheek.

Before the trio could leave, the henchmen blocked the exit. Rhino vowed the only way he would leave was in a body bag. Batman drank all of the milk at once, tossed his Utility Belt on the floor and readied himself for a fight. Everyone was in a good mood on the drive back to Gotham until Booster Gold hailed the Batmobile. Booster informed Batman that most of the Justice League's heavy hitters were either off-planet dealing with something near Rigel or in Atlantis at Aquaman's christening ceremony. He looked at the stand-by team and suggested Black Condor, Elongated Man, Triumph, and Bloodwynd. Nightwing gestured to Batman not to take any of them. Batman tried to end the converstation but Booster suggested he come down and B'Wana Beast would cover him. Nightwing grabbed a wrapper and crumpled it. Batman made up a story about driving under high-tension wires but Booster knew that was paper. Batman ended the call. Batman, Nightwing, and Harley dropped in through the skylight of Ivy's hideout.

Harley tried to talk to Ivy but she was adamant there was no other way. Batman threw a flash bomb and the fight began. Tables, beakers, and shelves were overturned. After Floronic Man swatted two Batarangs away, an electrical spark started a fire. Floronic Man stuffed a laptop and papers into a duffel bag. Goldblum came to and was stabbed in the heart by Floronic Man. He and Ivy fled then the ceiling collapsed and an explosion was triggered. Batman emerged from the rubble first then helped Nightwing push a cabinet off of him. They found Harley trying to console Goldblum. Batman advised Nightwing not to pull the debris out of him and injected Goldblum with something. Goldblum tried to tell them about the swamp water in Louisiana needed to complete the process. Harley told him to look up her grandmother Fran Quinzel when he got to Heaven. Firefighters doused the building fire remnants while Harley and Nightwing recuperated in an ambulance and Batman apprised Sarge Steel of the situation.

Batman informed them about police helping set up checkpoints and Steel calling in the FBI and National Guard. Batman remotely summoned the Batwing jet plane to get there was quickly as possible. He programmed the GPS coordinates of Alec Holland's old lab into the Batwing then tried to part ways with Harley. Harley convinced Batman to take her along but she neglected to tell him she got airsick sometimes until right before she threw up. Batman, Nightwing, Harley, and A.R.G.U.S. tactical agents searched the swamp. Harley was annoyed there wasn't bug spray in Batman's Utility Belt. She warned them about Ivy's plant traps. Several agents were pulled down a hole and eaten. Harley shoved Batman and Nightwing into the tendrils of a plant trap to buy time so she could try and reason with Ivy but it didn't work. Ivy was convinced she was saving the world. Harley threw concentrated weed-killer balls into the trap's mouth and disintegrated it. Batman and Nightwing failed to neutralize Floronic Man with conventional tactics. The Bio-Feedback Batarang and Sonic Disrupter failed as well.

The agents caught up and opened fire on Floronic Man but more traps attacked them. Harley realized Ivy didn't even test the forumula. Ivy contended she was going to save the world one way or another. Harley went with the "nuclear option" and made the saddest cute face she could. Ivy caved in, put down the container holding the virus, consoled Harley and wept. Batman and Nightwing were tossed near them. Floronic Man was disgusted and took charge. He went on a rant about humanity's end but Swamp Thing suddenly rose up from the swamp. While he admitted Floronic Man's cause was just, his actions would upset the balance in the Green. Floronic Man dropped to his knees and apologized. Batman, Nightwing, and Harley were relieved Swamp Thing was going to save the world. However, Swamp Thing decided it was not his place to judge and returned to the Parliament of the Trees to seek out hidden truths and know the unknowable nature in all its infinite splendors. Floronic Man laughed and removed the lid. Harley suddenly got an idea and asked for a match. Batman understood and got out a matchbook. Floronic Man was lit on fire. He ran off in a panic.

Two days after the Weinwright Swamp battle, Poison Ivy escaped her cell by taking advantage of a new orderly named Ken but Batman was waiting. Batman instructed Ken to never bring a plant in the same wing as Ivy and never tell her what other plants were in the building then ordered him to go to the medical center. Ivy was suprised she wasn't back in her cell. Batman revealed they were taking a walk first. As they passed Two-Face and Scarecrow, Batman stated she should be kept somewhere else but Arkham was the only facility around that was equipped to hold powerful people. Ivy thought he was kidding and stated Arkham was where all the freaks. Killer Croc saw Batman and became irate. Batman wondered if she was striking back at everyone through all the pain she felt or if she was like Clayface and wasn't even sure who she was anymore.

Ivy deduced his point was she wasn't as bad as some of the others. She suggested she just wasn't committed enough or genuises can't relate to other people. Batman responded with a "maybe" but added maybe she lost the thing that connected her to everyone else. Riddler tried to issue a riddle but Batman told him to shut up. Batman suggested the roof. Ivy found it nice and was surprised Batman was thinking of requesting her cell to be moved up there. Batman amused her with saying prisons keep people around those who make good choices. Ivy retorted she only hung out with Harley Quinn. Batman didn't think she was the worst friend to have, who was making an effort to go straight. Ivy appreciated he was trying to show he cared in his own weird way and knew she didn't make the world a better place but only cared about the most effective path to saving it. She then pointed out how hard a time Harley had with being hired and even recalled she just tried to break out.

Batman pointed out they on the roof, there were no guards, and the walls were covered with tons of ivy. At any point she could have crushed or strangled him. He stated change was hard but she was good at doing hard things. Ivy conceded and promised to give it more serious thought. Batman revealed he would look into the possibility of a work release option that kept her out of Arkham but added she to do him a favor, don't tell Harley he said she wasn't the worst. They shook on it. Ivy found that a hard request but agreed to it.

Five days after the Weinwright Swamp battle, Batman and Nightwing captured Catwoman following a museum heist. Nightwing saw Superbabes across the street. Batman noticed he was quiet. Nightwing felt a little hungry and went into Superbabes alone. Nightwing returned to the Batcave in the evening after failing to locate Harley Quinn. Alfred Pennyworth greeted him first. Pennyworth noticed something was wrong and inquired. Nightwing claimed it was nothing and tried to ask Bruce Wayne something but was cut off with a "no." Nightwing tried to ask if he could take the Batmobile out but Wayne cut him off again with another "no."

Nightwing took Alfred Pennyworth with him to the henchmen bar to blow off a bit of steam. Batman arrived, took in the carnage, and stated he should have known better. Nightwing assured him it was taken care of. Batman asked where Pennyworth was so they could leave. Batman realized Pennyworth was singing and stated they would leave after he was done. Nightwing suggested he sing "Ain't No Sunshine" next. Batman realized he lied about not hearing anything when he was in the shower. Nightwing felt better.

Six days after the Weinwright Swamp battle, Mark Desmond ordered two shots of Espresso in the Bowery but the barista got it wrong and he was triggered. Desmond transformed into Blockbuster and went on a rampage, wrecking anything in sight. Batman found Blockbuster and moved him away from civilians by ramming him with the Batmobile. He confirmed with Alfred Pennyworth to meet up. Blockbuster tried picking up the Batmobile but Batman fired the thrusters in his face. He threw a dumpster at it. To make matters worse, Pennyworth had to contend with traffic coming out of the Bowery. Batman clamped Blockbuster's right leg but he pulled on the cable. It snapped and he fell into the river. Pennyworth arrived and dropped off a serum. Batman gave him an important letter to mail right away. Blockbuster jumped to the side of a building. Batman glided after him but their conflict spilled into a room and they scared a boy and a girl. Batman double kicked Blockbuster in the chest and he crashed into pavement. Batman quickly sprayed the serum into his mouth. The compound was suppressed and he returned to normal. Batman declared his picture was going up in every cafe in Gotham.

10 days after the Weinwright Swamp battle, Harley was surprised to learn she was hired by the Aioli Clinic despite lacking her credentials. Dr. Connor, the head of the Psych Department, explained Bruce Wayne requested that they giver her a chance and he funded half the clinic. Harley was surprised Wayne even knew who she was.
