Poison Ivy was never fully human and was a natural mutation. She dedicated her life to protecting plant life but she was branded an eco-terrorist. She could control plants she created herself and her body chemistry could be utilized for unique abilities like hypnosis. Harley Quinn, her best friend, confided in Poison Ivy about the Joker's plans to attack the Gotham City Barbecue Festival with his Killer Hot Sauce. Ivy warned Harley but knew her too well. On a Thursday night, Poison Ivy arrived at a warehouse on the outskirts of Gotham City, ready to rescue Harley Quinn from the Joker but took on Batman, Nightwing, and the police instead. Ivy and Harley were carried off by the arboreal network while Batman and Nightwing tried to get free of the vines. The next morning, Harley woke up in Ivy's hothouse hideout and met her henchman Doug. Ivy cooked a breakfast of eggs, bacon, ham, and sausage. Instead of agreeing to go out on a romp, Ivy revealed her plan to protect a rare non-sterile form of Fatshedera Lizei vine from Wayne Enterprises' development of the banks of the Newton River for a hotel complex.
Harley set off Ivy when she made light of her vow to protect plant life. Harley in turn got upset when Ivy neglected to include herself as a person. She needed money to buy more equipment and hire more operatives. Harley thought her idea to rob a bank would only bring trouble her way. Doug suggested targeting people who wouldn't go to the police like Penguin or Black Mask. Harley recalled Catwoman was out of town and left to rob her jewelry collection. Ivy thanked her. Harley started to tear up. Ivy told her to stop but it was too late. They both started crying. Ivy purchased four barrels of biochemicals from her supplier, Floronic Man. He saw greatness and much potential in Ivy. Ivy replied she didn't want greatness, just chemicals. He saw her plan to protect the rare flower as futile when she could be doing something meaningful. She had no interest in his ideas. They were interrupted by Harley's return. Ivy was pleased with Harley's haul. Harley hugged Ivy and suggested it was time to have some fun.
Ivy promised they would later and ordered Doug to move the barrels after he was done pawning the jewelry. She needed more money to buy more chemicals as soon as possible. Doug took Harley with him to a poker game at the back of the Iceberg Lounge to spend their cuts. Rhino congratulated her and asked who she was henching for. Doug answered Poison Ivy for her. Harley became upset they thought she was Ivy's henchman. Someone noted they all thought she was the queen of the henchmen. She only got angrier. Doug told her to calm down. Harley kicked the table and proclaimed she was "Harley Freaking Quinn." A fight broke out and Doug was blamed. Doug made his way back to his apartment bruised only to find Batman and Nightwing waiting. Doug jumped out a window and ran off, unaware Batman slipped a tracer on him. Floronic Man taught Ivy how to control wild plants but she regretted letting him return as soon as he started talking about how she was more like his kind than the mammals. Floronic Man teased he'd be seeing her again then left.
Harley returned and was concerned that she was keeping her activities with Floronic Man a secret from her then asked Ivy to confirm they were partners. She did. Harley wanted to do something she wanted for once but Ivy wasn't too interested in filling City Hall with jelly beans. Harley realized she was in the passenger seat of every relationship she got into. Ivy insisted she was the only one of them she cared about. Harley was troubled Ivy didn't identify as a human, too, and ran off. Harley bumped into Doug, who was sure he lost Batman and Nightwing on Novick Street. They were perched atop a gargoyle and noted he stopped half a mile away. Batman wanted them to wait one more minute to be sure but Harley suddenly called out to them and led them right into the hothouse so Ivy could get the help she needed. Ivy sent her plants after them but was angered at them slashing and burning them up. She threatened to snap Nightwing's neck but Harley tackled her. She told Ivy to her face she was losing her humanity more and more each day and was afraid she going to do something crazy she couldn't come back from.
Ivy wasn't having it and made a paranoid accusation that Harley turned on her before she could turn on her. Ivy hated Harley and her need for human chaos. Harley didn't know what else to do and cried. Ivy vowed that was tears wouldn't save her life ever again then she rode away on a giant vine. Harley turned herself over to Batman and Nightwing and found it funny that was the only relationship she could count on. Before Harley could ask, Batman promised he would get Ivy some help once she was caught. One year and a couple months later, Harold Goldblum was kidnapped from his apartment by Poison Ivy and Floronic Man for his expertise in man-made pandemic attacks. Goldblum was subjected to Ivy's hypnotic kiss and ordered to help them with figuring out a plan to turn the human race into animal/plant hybrids in a bid to save the planet from destruction. To keep him subservient, Ivy had to kiss him every six hours. Trying to reverse engineer their own DNA for the virus would takes years, even decades.
It was determined they could expedite the process with Dr. Alec Holland's Bio-Restorative Formula. Two days later, Floronic Man and Poison Ivy broke into the Gotham City branch of S.T.A.R. Labs but the former tripped the alarm. Floronic Man engaged the security guards while Poison Ivy quickly tried to locate files on Dr. Alec Holland's Bio-Restorative Formula. The guards' bullets did little against Floronic Man's regenerative abilities. He shoved and threw them around like rag dolls, and killed at least one. One guard was nearly thrown at Ivy. She knocked him out with a stapler and continued searching. The formula was discovered. She downloaded the classified level 12 file to her thumb drive. Ivy kissed Goldblum again to keep him under her control for another six hours. Floronic Man found Ivy's method of mind control through kissing disgusting and suggested torture. Ivy objected to it and they got into it about what "humane" meant. Meanwhile, Harley attempted to bargain her help for a promise to let her to try and talk down Ivy first and help with the parole board. Batman refused and suggested she help out of self-preservation.
Batman deduced Ivy and Floronic Man were going to convert the formula that turned Holland into Swamp Thing into a fast-acting virus then save humanity by turning it into animal/plant hybirds but was more alarmed that if the virus was mis-prepared, it would simply kill everyone on the planet. Harley believed the best way to find Ivy was through Doug. They left Gotham for a bar frequented by henchmen. Harley took the stage and sang Blondie's "Hanging on the Telephone." Once Harley was finished, Shrubby wrote the location of Ivy's hideout on a matchbook. Goldblum substituted water from the Weinwright Swamp of Louisiana with that of Slaughter Swamp near Gotham City. He experimented on white lab mice. After injecting one, the mouse turned green and mutated leaf-like features on its back. Floronic Man was elated the mouse was stable. Ivy exclaimed how beautiful it was and scooped it up in her palms. Floronic Man proclaimed it was the harbinger of the new age. Before he could finish, the mouse imploded and liquefied.
Goldblum recorded it as "subject response negative." Floronic Man accused him of faking and not even trying. Ivy reiterated Goldblum was still under her control and told him to explain what went wrong. Goldblum started off saying the formula was a complex azeotrope and while the virus conversion of the formula worked perfectly on paper, there were literally millions of variables that could have corrupted the process. Floronic Man implored him to take a guess. Goldblum believed it was the swamp water. Ivy thought it was a pain in the ass. Floronic Man warmed up to the idea of unleashing the virus at Weinwright Swamp since the Gulf Stream Currents would carry the virus into the Greater Atlantic Ocean. Batman, Nightwing, and Harley dropped in through the skylight. Ivy was surprised Harley was with them. Harley tried to talk to Ivy but she was adamant there was no other way. Ivy summoned a potted plant. Nightwing jumped over and kicked Ivy. He was wrapped up but muscled his way free. Nightwing kicked her again then tossed her.
After Floronic Man swatted two Batarangs away, an electrical spark started a fire. Nightwing tackled Harley just in time to avoid an explosion. Floronic Man stuffed a laptop and papers into a duffel bag. Goldblum suddenly returned to normal but was confused. Before Ivy could hypnotize him again, Goldblum came to and was stabbed in the heart by Floronic Man. Harley called out to Ivy for help. Ivy paused but Floronic Man reminded her Harley betrayed her. He and Ivy fled then the ceiling collapsed and an explosion was triggered. Near the 10 mile marker outside of Gotham, Ivy and Floronic Man hid among some trees and observed a roadblock by the Main Street exit. Ivy regretted leaving the others to the fire. Floronic Man accused her of getting cold feet but she denied it. Ivy was confident she could disguise herself but not him. To circumvent detection at police roadblocks, airports, or train stations altogether, Floronic Man decided to use the last tuber he took off Swamp Thing's corpse a few years ago with Poison Ivy.
Ivy was revolted by the taste but soon felt its effects, observing a yellow aura around the trees. Floronic Man instructed her to take his hand then he touched one of the trees. She began to trip out but Floronic Man told her to relax, concentrate on their destination, and become one with the Green, an elemental force which connects all forms of plant life on Earth. They vanished into the tree. Floronic Man quickly reached for his duffel bag. They were teleported from Gotham City to Weinwright Swamp in Louisiana. Ivy tried to concentrate on finishing the virus but Floronic Man became impatient. He paced but stopped while Ivy tried to slowly push out the right amount of chemical from a syringe. Floronic Man started tapping his fingers on a stump. Ivy sighed. Harley shoved Batman and Nightwing into the tendrils of a plant trap to buy time so she could try and reason with Ivy claiming she was tampering with forces man was never meant to know and promised to put in a good word for her at her trial. It didn't work.
Ivy was still convinced she was saving the world. Harley threw concentrated weed-killer balls into the trap's mouth and disintegrated it. A fight broke out between Harley and Ivy while Batman and Nightwing fought Floronic Man. Ivy taunted Harley that she was too dumb to see they were going to change the world. Harley dodged her swing and gut punched her then threw her over the shoulder. Harley picked up her branch but Ivy animated it like a snake. Harley tried to emphasize how insane the plan was. Ivy reminded her mankind was killing the planet and contended what else she could do. Harley quickly suggested she vote Democrat or give money to Greenpeace. Ivy got irritated and snapped Greenpeace was for whales. Harley was shocked Ivy punched one of her breasts and returned the favor. They then punched each other in the face at the same time. She kicked Ivy down the hill onto her lab table. Harley promised she could fight all night. Ivy had enough and tripped Harley with a vine.
Harley realized Ivy didn't even test the forumula. Ivy contended she was going to save the world one way or another. Harley went with the "nuclear option" and made the saddest cute face she could. Ivy caved in, put down the container holding the virus, consoled Harley and wept. Batman and Nightwing were tossed near them. Ivy declared she was no longer willing to take a risk on the virus. Floronic Man was disgusted and raised a giant stalk. Ivy used her abilities to resist the stalk but was forced to kneel. She stood back up and declared the plant world belonged to her. She took control, gestured, and it shredded in half. Floronic Man simply punched her out then shoved Harley aside. Batman, Nightwing, and Harley stopped him with a lit match. Ivy was taken to Arkham Asylum and processed as inmate #3204. Two days after the Weinwright Swamp battle, Poison Ivy received steak dinner from a new orderly named Ken. Ivy asked if it was his first day. Ken revealed it was his second. He was surprised she ate steak.
Ivy stated plant food was everything else in the world but plants. Ken thought she hated mammals in general. Ivy got his name then stipulated she was just over-protective of the planet Earth. She noticed her cell was bare and asked for anything to decorate with. Ken honored her request and came back with chocolate pudding, a geranium, and a phildendron. Ivy manipulated the geranium and it sprayed Ken, paralyzing him in place. A vine swiped Ken's card and Ivy was free but Batman was waiting. He noted that was a new record for breaking out. Batman instructed Ken to never bring a plant in the same wing as Ivy and never tell her what other plants were in the building then ordered him to go to the medical center. Ivy was surprised she wasn't going back to her cell. Batman revealed they were taking a walk first. She assumed Batman wanted intelligence on Floronic Man or the Gotham underworld. He stated he didn't need anything. Ivy sarcastically asked if he needed her to make something for his belt.
As they passed Two-Face and Scarecrow, Batman stated she should be kept somewhere else but Arkham was the only facility around that was equipped to hold powerful people. Ivy thought he was kidding and stated Arkham was where all the freaks were. Killer Croc saw Batman and became irate. Batman wondered if she was striking back at everyone through all the pain she felt or if she was like Clayface and wasn't even sure who she was anymore. Clayface teased Ivy for having the special privilege of hanging out with Batman. Batman noted he held onto his anger as an identity. Clayface took Ivy's form and continued mocking Ivy, pretending to have learned his lesson and promising not to attack the world again. Then he turned into a scary plant. Clayface claimed he couldn't help himself then announced "Destroy the Bloodbags!" Ivy told him to shut up and called him "Silly Putty." Ivy deduced Batman's point was she wasn't as bad as some of the others. She suggested she just wasn't committed enough or genuises can't relate to other people.
Batman responded with a "maybe" but added maybe she lost the thing that connected her to everyone else. Riddler tried to issue a riddle but Batman told him to shut up. Batman suggested the roof. Ivy found it nice and was surprised Batman was thinking of requesting her cell to be moved up there. Batman amused her with saying prisons keep people around those who make good choices. Ivy retorted she only hung out with Harley Quinn. Batman didn't think she was the worst friend to have, who was making an effort to go straight. Ivy appreciated he was trying to show he cared in his own weird way and knew she didn't make the world a better place but only cared about the most effective path to saving it. She then pointed out how hard a time Harley had with being hired and even recalled she just tried to break out. Batman pointed out they on the roof, there were no guards, and the walls were covered with tons of ivy. At any point she could have crushed or strangled him.
Batman stated change was hard but she was good at doing hard things. Ivy conceded and promised to give it more serious thought. Batman revealed he would look into the possibility of a work release option that kept her out of Arkham but added she had to do him a favor, don't tell Harley he said she wasn't the worst. They shook on it. Ivy found that a hard request but agreed to it.
