From a young age, Edward Nashton lived a life reinforced with truth, enigma and puzzles. His father forced him to only speak the truth, his schoolteacher held a contest to see which student could solve it faster and took a job at a local fair's puzzle booth. He admired the late escape artist, Harry Houdini, and turned to crime to commit acts of showmanship. As the Riddler, he compulsively left riddles at the scene of the crime and was constantly outsmarted by Batman.
