The Phantom Zone is an extradimensional realm formerly used by Kryptonians to imprison their most dangerous criminals. This was achieved by a device called the Phantom Zone Projector. It eventually fell into Superman's possession and was kept in the Fortress of Solitude. While showing Firestorm, Blue Beetle, and Stargirl around, Superman stopped in the Krypton Room to show them the Projector. The alien kitten carried around by Stargirl was angered with the appearance of Zod, Faora, and Quex-Ul on the view screen and pounced on the control console. As a result, Superman was pulled into the Phantom Zone. Firestorm tried to release him but let Zod, Faora, and Quex-Ul out instead. Blue Beetle tried pressing both buttons at once but shorted out the Projector instead. Firestorm and Professor Stein later repaired it and freed Superman. After Firestorm briefed him about what happened, Superman banished Zod, Faora, and Quex-Ul back into the Phantom Zone. One of the only remains of Krypton that didn't turn into Kryptonite, a prism acts as a gateway between the physical realm and the Phantom Zone.
