The Phantom Zone Projector is a Kryptonian device used to transport Krypton's most dangerous criminals to an extradimensional realm known as the Phantom Zone to serve out their prison sentences. It is currently in the possession of Superman and is housed in the Fortress of Solitude's Krypton Room. While showing the device to Firestorm, Blue Beetle, and Stargirl, an alien kitten carried around became startled by Zod, Faora, and Quex-Ul as they came into view. It pounced on the Projector's console and Superman was banished to the Phantom Zone. Firestorm tried to free him but Zod, Faora, and Quex-Ul were released instead. To make matters even worse, Blue Beetle shorted out the machine by pressing both buttons on the console at once. Once the Kryptonian trio was defeated and recaptured, Firestorm and Professor Stein fixed the Projector and freed Superman. Superman did the honors and returned criminals to the Phantom Zone.
A smaller, mobile version of the Phantom Zone Projector was kept at the Watchtower. After Zod escaped the zone again, Batman tried to use the mobile version on him but Zod blocked the beam with the Kryptonian Prism. They were unaware Zod was only turned intangible and returned to the Watchtower. Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman suffered a delayed reaction and became intangible, too. After some trial and error, they led Booster Gold to the projector with a trail of Jaw Destroyers. Batman placed a dollar bill on top of the projector. Once Booster snatched it, he inadvertently set off the device. However, Zod flew in front of them at the last second and became tangible. Zod grabbed the projector then blasted the prism which freed Faora and Quex. Going off of Batman's plan, Booster begged Zod to send him to the zone to be with his friends. Zod took the bait and fired. Booster held out the prism and restored Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman to normal.
Zod attempted to send them to the zone but Wonder Woman whipped a green Jaw Destroyer at his head. Superman grabbed a reflective panel and deflected the projector's beam. Zod, Faora, and Quex were sucked into the projector and Superman caught it.
