The Mother Box is a highly advanced living computer used by the New Gods. Its main capability is generating Boom Tubes, interplanetary gateways that take its user from one planet to another in an instant no matter the distance. After Superman discovered Steppenwolf after a battle with Parademons, Steppenwolf held out his Mother Box and generated a Boom Tube. He tackled Superman through it. Desaad perfected a Mother Box that could generate a Boom Tube massive enough for a small fleet of warships to pass through and invade Earth but Superman planted the Atom on it. They thought he infected it with a virus. The fleet was boomed to the Third Moon of Graxos IV instead and Kanto was unable to disinfect the Mother Box and Boom Tube network. They attempted to torture the solution out of Superman but he refused. Space Cabbie returned with Hawkman and Swamp Thing. During the course of the battle, Superman was freed. After he defeated Darkseid, Superman gave Atom the signal. Desaad realized the Boom Tube generator was back online. Superman presented a portable Mother Box and boomed Darkseid to the acid lake planet Schlough.
The Joker was gifted a Mother Box by Desaad. He used it to get into Stryker's Island Penitentiary and extract Lex Luthor. Joker used the Mother Box to take Luthor all over the planet and avoiding Justice Leaguers' attacks. In the final part of his best day ever plan, Joker effectively used it for offense and defense. He teleported and fired energy blasts in concert. Luthor tricked Joker and neutralized him then turned the Mother Box over to Superman. Mr. Miracle swiped Darkseid's Mother Box upon greeting him then boomed him away from the battle between himself, Batman, and Big Barda and several elites. Mr. Miracle saved the last piece of the Anti-Life Equation and boomed to safety. He later opened a tube to the Watchtower on Batman's order to retreat. Darkseid used his Mother Box to boom out a pocket dimension he was using to run a simulation after his robot duplicates of the Justice League discovered what they were and destroyed his test data.
Granny Goodness infiltrated Booster Gold's Justice League Watchtower Guided Celebrity Tour and Souvenir Emporium and planned to use a Mother Box to send the building into the Sun. Things went awry when the internal defenses detected suspicious devices and sent in a rapid deployment team of 32 security drones. Granny tossed the Mother Box to Toyman who tossed it to Joker who handed it to Booster Gold. Booster activated the Mother Box and threw it at Teddy, Toyman's robot. It fell into the Boom Tube and 31 drones followed. Most of the Justice League used their Mother Box to boom from the Watchtower and stop the Red Lanterns from invading Earth but it was a diversion. Dex-Starr was sent ahead to infiltrate the Watchtower and use the League's Mother Box to boom the Red Lanterns directly to Earth. Plastic Man helped capture Dex-Starr while Krypto cut the Boom Tube and the Red Lanterns were sucked back through as it closed.
