Billy Batson was chosen by the Wizard to be his champion against the enemies of eternity in present times. When Batson spoke his name "Shazam", a bolt of lightning would transform the young boy into a fully grown man imbued with the Wizard's power. Though in this form, Batson's personality persisted. Batson idolized the Justice League and managed to collect every trading card of them.
While in the middle of playing a video game, Billy Batson was teleported to the Rock of Eternity by the Wizard. Batson lamented he was just about to level up. The Wizard instructed him to say his name and vanquish Black Adam, who invaded the Rock and wanted the Wizard's throne for himself. Batson complied but Adam trapped the lightning within a Black Orb. Batson rushed Adam but was simply tripped and taken prisoner. Bound in shackles, Batson could only watch as Adam released the Monsters of Eternity onto Earth. He noticed Batman sneaking into the room and started taunting Adam in order to distract him. Batman and the Wizard failed to destroy the Orb. The Wizard revealed to Batson he could still summon his power, he just needed the strength of mind. After shouting the Wizard's name three times, Batson broke the Orb and he was transformed into Shazam. He easily defeated Black Adam in combat. Adam attempted to return to the throne only to see the Wizard was already seated. He banished Adam. Shazam was eager to return to Earth and recapture the Monsters of Eternity.
Batman enlisted Batson's help against the last of the Brothers Djinn in case Green Arrow's plan didn't work. They arrived at Calythos' second volcano in the Batjet just as Black Adam made his return. Batson jumped out the Batjet and changed into Shazam. He was undaunted by Adam's claim he doubled his power since the last fight. Plastic Man, Swamp Thing, Batman, and Wonder Woman temporarily immobilized Adam, allowing Shazam and Superman to punch him into a portal opened by Constantine. To his surprise, Shazam was invited to join the Justice League and help out just as long as it wasn't a school night. He later helped assemble the League's new base, the Watchtower. Shazam was part of the Bravo Squad sent to the United Nations Building to back up Batman, Superman, and Stargirl against Gorilla Grodd. Mr. Mxyzptlk stole their minds and switched them around. Shazam was in Plastic Man's body and Ronnie Raymond was in his. Shazam lacked control and Plastic Man's body melted into a puddle. Raymond kept shifting from Shazam to Batson saying his namesake.
Shazam was in the Midwest during the Amazo incident. A short time after Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn stole Justice-1, it went into a free fall. Superman, Shazam, and Martian Manhunter caught it at the last second. Shazam attended Green Arrow's Christmas party on Christmas Eve. Billy Batson attended the birthday party of a friend and brought ice cream his friend's mother asked for. Batson saw the Joker and everyone tied up. He tried to stop him in vain. Joker tied up and gagged him then threw him in a trunk. Joker attempted to saw him in half but Batson got a hand free then pulled down the gag then spoke the word "Shazam." Shazam burst from the trunk and teased Joker for working as a birthday clown. Joker reached for his gun but Shazam decked him, tied him up, and forced him to help make balloon animals.
Batson's Uncle Dudley drove to Metropolis in his RV and did crowd control in the city during one of Felix Faust's latest attacks. Mr. Mxyzptlk happened to teleport to the city at the same time and was intrigued with Dudley. He was amused when Dudley cheered on Shazam and imitated his moves. Shazam was the first hero to arrive and started fighting the knights then Batman, Wonder Woman, and Red Tornado arrived. Faust attempted to run away but Shazam noticed and grabbed him. Wonder Woman noticed him and informed him the Justice League preferred for civilians to stay out of harm's way. Not understanding, Dudley reported he got everyone cleared out. Batman pointed out she meant him. Dudley introduced himself as Shazam's helper. Shazam confirmed he was family but understood their implications. Shazam returned Dudley to his RV while they turned Faust over to the authorities. Mxyzptlk decided to turn Dudley into his latest pawn. The RV was too cramped for Shazam so he turned back into Billy Batson.
Dudley admitted he kept Batson's room exactly as it was and invited him to another road trip anytime he wanted. Batson let Dudley down nicely telling him he could really help if he was out of harm's way during a fight. Dudley was saddened. Batson apologized but stated that was how it had to be then told him he would seem him down at the diner. After Batson left, Dudley noticed a strange glow coming from the bathroom. Mxyzptlk rose from the toilet in a wizard costume and pretended to be the Wizard. Mxyzptlk made him believe he chose to give him abilities with his own magic word for having the heart of a hero. He gave him the word "Bamboozle." Dudley was transformed into Captain Bamboozle, similar to Shazam. Captain Bamboozle went on patrol and caused more harm than good. Bamboozle responded to a bank robbery but hit the pillars inside. He held up the ceiling instead of stopping the two thieves. Shazam arrived and was shocked to discover Dudley had powers. Shazam returned with three steel girders and propped them up.
Shazam was shocked to learn the Wizard gave Dudley powers. Dudley described the Wizard to Batman and he drew a sketch on a tablet. He deduced it was Mr. Mxyzptlk wearing a fake beard. Shazam quickly briefed him about the imp and his weakness. Mxyzptlk enlarged a kitten to giant size and let it loose on the city to induce Dudley to cause more damage. Dudley got an idea and insisted on helping. Rather than fight the kitten, he did crowd control. Shazam was enamoured by the kitten but it smelled him, licked him, and chomped on him. He was naturally grossed out by the slobber. Mxyzptlk was infuriated and ordered him to use his powers. Dudley liked the idea and stated he was use his food power then muscle power then finish it off with his incredible power of Ktlpzyxm. Mxyzptlk fell for it and asked what Ktlpzyxm was. He realized he said his name backwards and was banished back to his home dimension. Dudley watched as his powers and costume disappeared. Shazam congratulated him on outsmarting the imp rather than three of the most powerful members of the League doing so. Batman also congratulated him and presented the kitten, back to normal size. Shazam wiggled his finger and got bit.
