Long ago, there was a race of powerful beings known as the Old Gods. After an explosive end, their planet was split in two. Each formed into its own planet, New Genesis and Apokolips. The race of near-immortal powerful beings on each came to be known as the New Gods. New Genesis were good and chose life. They were led by Highfather. Apokolips were evil and chose anti-life. They were led by Darkseid. Around the mid-8th century, the New Gods waged a bloody and endless war against each other After a thousand years of constant conflict, in 1962, they agreed to a peace treaty that would be sealed between the marriage of Bekka, granddaughter of Highfather, and Orion, a son of Darkseid. The wedding was to be held on Apokolips. On the night before the wedding, Orion admitted to Bekka he believed they were the only hope for their worlds but they would have to be prepared for treachery all around them.
Orion was fatally correct. After Bekka and Orion were pronounced husband and wife, the New Gods of New Genesis went ahead with their plan and murdered their opposites. Bekka, fled the "nightmare" on Apokolips through a Boom Tube. Her Mother Box took her across 12 planets before settling on Earth. In late 1967, Bekka was exposed to experimental drugs. She experienced the fused ruins of New Genesis and Apokolips and fought undead versions of those she loved and loathed among the New Gods. Nearly 50 years later, a week after Will Magnus was defeated, Bekka decided to return home and deal with her past. Dr. Lex Luthor went with her to satisfy his quest for knowledge and exploring the mysteries of the universe.
