Alura In-Ze is the mother of Kara (later Supergirl) and wife of Zor-El. Although a gifted scientist, Alura loved the arts. She and Kara would often draw together and do passes on each other's work. Ever since the first day of kindergarten, Alura would assure Kara "everything will be okay." Alura wished Kara good luck on the day of her science class final. The bullies at school teased Kara for taking Comet, her pet horse, to school and for her house name appearing on her back pack. Kara and Alura worked on a costume together. Red was Alura's favorite color, blue was Zor-El's and yellow was Kara's. They incorporated all three into the costume. The cape was modeled after one Zor-El had when he was a child. One day, Kara found a Mnemosyne Crystal and brought it back to Alura. Alura mused after they got it polished, it would be very powerful. Alura kept it on necklace since. She secretly programmed the crystal so that Kara would always remember them. It was set to activate when she was old enough to understand and when she needed to hear from them.
One day, Alura was eager to be first in line for the Geology Exhibit at the Science Museum in Argo City. Earthquakes suddenly rattled the planet. After the Kryptonian Council realized Krypton was doomed, they started a colonizer program to rebuild civilization on other planets. For some reason, the program's selection committee - General Zod and Faora - thought Zor-El and Alura were mad scientists and didn't choose Kara for the program. Zor-El and Alura constructed a spacecraft on their own. They also created the Groundbreaker, a very powerful terraforming device that could transform a barren planet in moments to a planet resembling Krypton. Alura gave Kara her Mnemosyne necklace so she could always be with her and could activate the Groundbreaker. She also told Kara that there is no government without flaw and when the law was at odds with what we know in our hearts to be right, we must do what is right. Kara was launched from Krypton but her ship was sucked in a wormhole and she arrived on Earth a few decades later than what was programmed. Krypto was launched with a crystal designed to blow up the Groundbreaker in case it was misused by someone like Zod.
During the Hero of the Year week, the Mnemosyne Crystal activated and Supergirl began to see her parents in visions. She mistook it for a sign they survived Krypton and were looking for her. Dark Opal used his magic to pose as Alura in an attempt to gain the Mnemosyne Crystal. Opal referred to her as "Supergirl" and gave himself away. Eventually, Eclipso and Opal got the Mnemosyne for their Scepter but Supergirl overloaded it with her heat vision. In the aftermath, Bumblebee found a piece of it in the grass. Supergirl said goodbye to Alura and shed a tear. It landed on the piece and activated. Alura told Supergirl nothing could destroy the crystal because nothing could destroy her love for her daughter. She asked Supergirl to take that love and share it with others and create a new family.
