Krypton is the home planet of Superman and Supergirl (Kara Zor-El). It is located several solar systems away from Earth and on the left or about 21.7 light years. At some point, Brainiac stole the city of Kandor and shrank it for its collection. One day, Kara went to Krypton High School on her pet horse Comet. She was teased by a trio of bullies for using a horse instead of a hover board. They shoved her into a pool of mud. Kara rushed to science class and was chosen to present her project for finals first. While Kara's new solution for growing crystals three times as fast was a success, one of the bullies let Comet go. Kara dropped the solution and ran outside to get Comet. A giant crystal burst out from the roof. The science teacher flunked Kara for being so careless and neglectful. While out with Comet and Krypto, Kara discovered a Mnemosyne Crystal and showed it to Alura. She polished it and programmed it so Kara would always remember her family and home. Earthquakes were the first warning sign that something was really wrong on Krypton.

The government realized the planet was doomed and started a program to send young people to new planets, where they could rebuild Kryptonian civilization. The colonizer program was headed by General Zod. The law was passed that no one else could leave the planet. During the last days of Krypton, Zor-El and Alura built a powerful terraforming device called the Groundbreaker that could transform a barren planet in moments. They couldn't get it to Kara in time before she was launched. Zod stole the Groundbreaker then left in his ship and was never heard from again. Zor-El and Alura devised a failsafe for the Groundbreaker and put it on Krypto's dog tag. The planet soon met its natural destruction and imploded. Three Kryptonians were sent away in single occupant spacecraft each, an infant Kal-El, teenage Kara Zor-El, and Krypto. The destruction of Krypton was part of a prophecy recorded on Gemworld. It foretold the last gem of an extinct planet bound with treasure from across the universe would give way to ultimate power. Supergirl's Mnemosyne Crystal was used to complete Eclipso's Scepter and she plotted to destroy Gemworld and take over the universe with it.
