The Phantom Zone Projector is the one device capable of gaining access to the Phantom Zone, the inescable prison dimension. A fare happened to leave one behind in a Space Cab. The Cabbie put it in his trunk then later collided with an out-of-control space pod holding Green Lantern Jessica Cruz, Star Sapphire, Big Barda, and Beast Boy. Sapphire and Cruz decided to use it to go to the Zone and rescue the Green Lanterns. Sapphire instructed Cabbie to project them into the Zone, wait ten minutes, then put it in reverse to pull them back out - all while his meter was kept running. Cabbie obliged her but Cruz vowed to go first since it was her responsibility as a Green Lantern even though she was scared. They all admitted to what scared them. Cabbie noted he was afraid he'd miss the game tonight on account of some yappy kids then fired the Projector. He brought them back to outer space with the Green Lanterns at the settled time.
Cabbie placed the Projector in the front of the cab and took off with Star Sapphire, Beast Boy, and Big Barda while the Lanterns led the way to Oa. Once Oa was saved, Star Sapphire asked Cabbie to borrow the projector. Green Lantern Galius Zed sent Zod, Faora, and Non to the Phantom Zone to serve a life sentence.
