The famed Amethyst from Gemworld adorns the Super Hero High School's tallest tower and doubles as a welcome beacon for incoming flyers. It also contains more energy than a nuclear power plant, enough to amplify a villain's arsenal 100 fold, and once served as a portal to Gemworld. The portal remained inactive for decades. A weight sensitive precaution is affixed to the Amethyst's resting pad. If it is removed, a security alarm is triggered. During semester finals one year, Lucius Fox's invisible jetpack was sabotaged by Cheetah in a scheme to net her Hero of the Month. Fox tested the pack and got stuck on the Amethyst. Wonder Woman held the gem in place while Bumblebee and Harley Quinn rescued Fox. Wonder Woman had Poison Ivy secure the top of the tower with vines. Wonder Woman inspected the gem and noticed Cheetah clinging the jetpack. She was afraid of touching the Lasso of Truth and fell. Wonder Woman caught with the lasso and she accidentally confessed to her attempts to make Wonder Woman look bad.

On her first day, Supergirl crashed into the cafeteria. Principal Waller assigned Wonder Woman to check on the Amethyst then double check. Waller warned even a crack would be disasterous. About a week later, Granny Goodness' true colors were revealed. She had her pet Parademon Perry place her Mother Box on the Amethyst. It supercharged Granny and her Female Furies. She then emitted a frequency that placed everyone under a state of hypnosis. Barbara Gordon came up with a plan to plant her De-Trancer on the Amethyst and use it as a power source, as well. It worked and everyone was freed. Granny Goodness tried to make a play for the Amethyst but Wonder Woman, Supergirl and Batgirl intervened and saved the day. The Thursday before the Hero of the Year ceremony, Dark Opal reactivated the Amethyst's portal and found Eclipso. Early Friday morning, Opal came through the Amethyst, attacked Hawkgirl, and stole her Nth Metal belt. The night of the Hero of the Year ceremony, Dark Opal and Eclipso appeared at the Amethyst. Armed with her Scepter, Eclipso touched the Amethyst and generated a parabolic shield that covered an area around the tower. It dropped once Eclipso was distracted with fighting Opal over the Scepter.

Darkseid used the Amethyst to transmit the Anti-Life Equation after he solved it by tricking the students of Super Hero High and posing as a math teacher. After the equation took hold, the crystal turned black, the skies turned dark, and a maelstrom manifested in the sky that fired purple lightning capable of transforming all living beings into Darkseid. After Harley Quinn, Raven, Batgirl, and Bumblebee reminded Wonder Woman, Supergirl, and Katana and turned them back to normal, that was enough to change the solution to the Anti-Life Equation. The Amethyst returned to normal and transformed everyone back as well.
