Ares is the Greek god of war, son of Zeus, and half brother of Wonder Woman. He considers himself the commander of armies and warrior supreme, as well. Preoccupied with ongoing wars in the world, Ares spent much time away from Mount Olympus. One summer, Ares teleported to Olympus amid dinner. Wonder Woman and her guest Bumblebee mistakenly attacked him. Wonder Woman punched him and he countered with fireballs until Zeus cleared the air and explained they were brother and sister. Ares formally greeted Wonder Woman and admired her punch. He walked off with Apollo, Demeter, and Aphrodite. Bumblebee tried to reassure Wonder Woman that every family had one bad apple in it. Later in the summer, Zeus showed off a family album to Wonder Woman, Siracca, and Bumblebee. Ares became impatient and wanted to play chess with Zeus. Halfway through summer, Ares suggested a capture only hunt for family game day. Zeus liked the idea and chose his favorite pet, a Chimera, as the beast to be caught. Ares enforced classic Olympus rules and collected any device that could be used for tracking, including cellular phones.
Ares slashed through tall grass with his sword and was agitated he couldn't find the Chimera. Wonder Woman, Bumblebee, and Siracca teamed up and captured it. Wonder Woman was whisked to the Choice Dimension with Janus to decide on accepting or declining Zeus' offer to become a full goddess. They abruptly returned to Olympus as Strife arrived with the Shield of Ares. Batgirl, Katana, and Beast Boy were in hot pursuit of Strife and landed. Ares revealed he planned on going back on his word to never attack Wonder Woman's residence now that he had his shield. With the Amulet of Harmonia and the Golden Olive Branch, the shield's only weaknesses, Ares was confident he was unstoppable. Strife used her ability to sway Apollo, Aphrodite, Demeter, Hermes, Janus, and Siracca to their side. Wonder Woman refused to get out of their way. Ares fired a flame blast in anger but Zeus jumped in front of her and took the hit. Zeus pointed out he was immortal then implored Wonder Woman to defend Metropolis with her friends. Ares and Strife took the gods with them to Metropolis and began their attack.
As the gods spread hate, violence, and discord throughout the city, Ares grew in power and size. Ares and Strife made their way through Centennial Park. The Save the Day Alarm was triggered soon after. Janus, Aphrodite, Demeter, and Apollo were captured outside of Super Hero High School by Green Lantern and Star Sapphire after battling the supers. Supergirl, Cheetah, Thunder, Lightning, Flash, Frost, Batgirl, Ivy, Harley Quinn, Bumblebee, Cyborg, Starfire, Beast Boy, and Big Barda joined Wonder Woman and fought Ares but he was still invulnerable and only got stronger from their attacks. Strife turned the supers against each other but Bumblebee hid herself in a Capes & Cowls Cafe cup. Ares and Strife invited Wonder Woman to join them but she refused again and turned her back. Ares fired a blast but Bumblebee took the hit for her. Suddenly, Ares felt pain and lost some power. Wonder Woman flew Bumblebee to safety and sighted Siracca and Hawkgirl in an alley. Hawkgirl revealed the Shield of Ares had a third weakness called Philia or love of friendship.
They realized that's how Wonder Woman broke Strife's control of Siracca and later Bumblebee broke her hold on Wonder Woman. Ares remarked he hadn't had so much fun since the days of the Colosseum. Wonder Woman tied her Lasso of Truth around her wrist then declared she would do anything and sacrifice anything for her friends even if it meant joining their side to ensure her friends survivied. The Lasso illuminated and electricity surged around it then cracked the Shield of Ares. Wonder Woman started listing all the qualities she loved in her friends. Strife's spell was broken and Ares was reduced to a tiny stature. He abandoned the shield and retreated. Strife called him a little rat and ran after him. The Golden Olive Branch and Amulet of Harmonia were found and returned to the British Museum and Themyscira, respectively.
Ares invited Zeus to a feast but he did not attend. In a rage, Ares teleported to Themyscira and interrupted the Party of Plenty. Hippolyta tried to tell him he wasn't invited but Harley Quinn stepped in and swung her mallet. Ares caught it and threw Harley across the dining table. Ares approached Wonder Woman and wanted to know if Zeus was present. Wonder Woman denied it and had no clue where he was. Ares demanded to know where Zeus was and flipped the table. Harley tried to swing her mallet but Ares burnt it to a crisp. Batgirl, Supergirl, and Wonder Woman were no match for Ares. Wonder Woman instructed Harley to go to the Hall of Honors and get the Amulet of Harmonia. The others were blasted out of the palace. Ares jumped down into the forest and continued blasting flames. Batgirl threw out two smoke bombs then in unison, she threw two Batarangs while Wonder Woman and Supergirl punched Ares in the face. He was lassoed. Wonder Woman reiterated Zeus wasn't present and told him to leave. Ares was enraged with being told what do by his little sister.
Ares removed the Lasso then grew into a giant. He conjured a sword and mace then took a swing at the palace. Wonder Woman scrambled and held the roof up with her own strength. Harley returned and jumped onto Ares' mace, ran up his arm, then jumped to his face. She stamped the Amulet on his forehead and activated it. Ares was overcome by its power and suddenly felt harmonious. He apologized for tearing up the party, placed two columns back, shrank back to normal size, and teleported back home to meditate. Wonder Woman apologized to her friends for the family drama. Ares later stopped by the Capes & Cowls Cafe to see Wonder Woman and give her his Golden Fleece as a peace offering. Batgirl, Wonder Woman, and Supergirl were skeptical at first but Ares promised he felt more like the god of peace ever since they put the amulet on him. He hanged with them in a booth. As he ate a vegan burger, Ares suggested they should join a drum circle because it would change their life. Catwoman noticed the amulet and plotted to steal it.
Ares confirmed he knew Helen of Troy and remarked she was a special kind of lady. Supergirl heard Harley Quinn yelling for help. According to Catwoman's plans, she went back to Super Hero High with Batgirl and Wonder Woman to investigate. Ares implored them to take their time while he savored his elixir. He told Steve Trevor, Frost, and Starfire a funny store about Hercules mistaking his mother for a Siren. Catwoman sneaked in and threw out a Pollen Grenade. As Ares bent down to grab the grenade, Catwoman lowered down and stole the amulet undetected. After she sneaked back out, Ares was overcome with rage. He squashed the grenade and demanded to know who stole the amulet. Ares grew to gigantic proportions and erupted out of the building. He stepped out and walked into the city. He vowed to destroy the city and rocked it with tremors as he marched on. Batgirl and the Flash vacated the Bat Bunker at Capes & Cowls as the base suffered a cave-in from the tremors.
Wonder Woman led a team of flyers consisting of Bumblebee, Starfire, Supergirl, Miss Martian, Hawkgirl, and Beast Boy while Batgirl and Flash picked up Frost, Lady Shiva, Ivy, and Harley. Wonder Woman tried to appeal to Ares but he rejected peace and stated war was the natural order of the world. He ripped a lightning rod from the roof and batted her into a building. Supergirl engaged him while Frost and Flash evacuated a toppling building. Ivy tried to use the potted plants outside Capes & Cowls to immobilze Ares but she watched in horror as he snapped them. He knocked Hawkgirl to the ground then Frost tried freezing his legs. Ares retaliated with flame burst. Oracle concluded Ares' weakness was his lightning rod. Batgirl told Bumblebee and Starfire to blast it. Ares was overcome with an energy surge. Wonder Woman lassoed one leg then Harley grappled the other from the Mobile HQ. As they pulled, Ares was smacked by Beast Boy in the form of a whale. Hawkgirl and Miss Martian hit him in the back. He fell to the pavement. The supers celebrated their victory.
Ares arose and stated they would pay for it. He bashed a nearby building. Flash evacuated civilians while Wonder Woman and Supergirl held the building up. They agreed to try and lure Ares away from the city. Wonder Woman mocked Ares with the Golden Fleece. Ares deemed she wasn't worthy of it and took the bait. Wonder Woman and Supergirl tossed it to each other as Ares gave chase. Batgirl, Miss Martian, and Flash retrieved the Amulet from Catwoman's vault in her dorm room and returned. Catwoman overheard and claimed she thought it was just a cool necklace. Flash blamed her for everything until Bumblebee reiterated the need for a plan. Catwoman volunteered to get the Amulet back on Ares and followed him roof to roof. Ares unleashed a furious blast that sent the supers flying. As Ares prepared to smash the unconscious Supergirl and Wonder Woman, Catwoman made her move. She got the Amulet around a finger. Ares paused and shrunk back down to normal size. He felt a gnarly headache and surveyed the damage. He realized he did it and put the Amulet back on. Overwhelmed with remorse, Ares was surprised when Wonder Woman came to help him. She replied that's what family was for.
