Giovanni Zatara became a stage magician by age 19. He learned the art of sorcery after reading the formerly lost journals of Leonardo Da Vinci, his alleged ancestor. While traveling in Turkey, Zatara met and married Sindella. She soon gave birth to their daughter, Zatanna. But Zatara was left to raise Zatanna by himself.
Over a decade later, Zatara took on a pupil named John Smith (Bruce Wayne). Zatara sensed Wayne's desire to learn and taught him everything he knew about the escape arts. After three months, Wayne had to press on and planned on going to Japan next. Zatara obliged him.
