Sul Van was the father of Lana, Superman's mother. He was also a member of Krypton's Council, bureaucrats that made decisions on Krypton's behalf. Sul Van was embarassed by his son-in-law's attitude and found himself in a conflict of interest. Sul Van was finally swayed by Jor'El's claim of an impending cataclysm. In order to buy time, Sul Van drove a ship from the El residence to draw away police forces. As a result, Jor-El was able to launch Kal-El to Earth.
