Born and raised in England, Alfred Pennyworth entered the British Secret Service. His exploits are unrevealed, except for Project Excalibur. England retained one of its hidden missile silos as a last resort defensive measure. The site could only be activated by two verbal commands. One was given to Pennyworth. After quitting the Service, Pennyworth moved to America and became family butler to Thomas and Martha Wayne in Gotham City, just as their son Bruce was born.
When Thomas and Martha were murdered, Pennyworth and a family friend Dr. Leslie Thompkins raised Bruce. Pennyworth did his best to prevent Bruce from falling into the darkness of insanity over his parents' deaths and acted as a surrogate father. He shared in Wayne's desire for justice and willingly went along with Wayne's plan. After Wayne returned to Gotham from his world travels, Pennyworth was relieved to see him fall in love with Andrea Beaumont but circumstances prevented their happy ending. Wayne became Batman. On the first night, even Pennyworth was taken aback. Aside from house work and helping with Wayne's appointments, Pennyworth offers his witty retorts to Batman. Since then he has been aide to Bruce and later Dick Grayson, Barbara Gordon, and Tim Drake.
