Jimmy Olsen was raised by his mother in Metropolis. As a teenager, Olsen signed up as an intern at the Daily Planet. He hoped to become a star photographer. However, his photos were of the everyday mundanities. Olsen soon developed fearlessness when he became daredevil reporter, Lois Lane's photographer. He found himself thrust into life threatening feats. Olsen often went along with Lane because he took editor, Perry White's advice, about truthful reporting, to heart. Olsen shares a father-son relationship with White and affectionately calls him "Chief."

While Olsen was showing his photos to the Planet's latest recruit, Clark Kent, Kent spotted a ship with a Kaznian flag. Kent was able then deduce the location of the terrorist squad who stole the Lexo Suit was on that ship. Olsen also began a friendship with Superman. On more than one occassion, he helped save Superman from the likes of Parasite and Metallo. Even in parallel universes, Olsen is connected to Superman. Lois Lane was accidentally transported to one such universe. She observed a totalitarian regime led by Lex Luthor and enforced by Lex Luthor. That universe's Jimmy Olsen was the leader of an underground movement opposing Luthor.

In an interview gone wrong, Jimmy Olsen was publicly dubbed "Superman's Pal." He soon became an unwanted target of street thugs and the like. Olsen was even manipulated by an agent of Metallo to lure Superman into a trap. Superman felt that he wouldn't be able to save Olsen all the time by luck. Superman gave Olsen a special watch which transmits a hypersonic signal that Superman can hear, rather than listening for a random plea for help. Olsen's fame continued to plague him. Years later, an ousted Huntress kidnapped Olsen and used the watch on a hunch to get Superman's attention.
