Anthony "Big Words" Rodriguez, John "Gabby" Gabrielli, Patrick "Scrapper" Macguire, and Thomas "Tommy" Thompkins are a group of orphaned boys who are growing up in the inner city of Metropolis, notoriously called the Suicide Slums. The boys were watched by Officer Jim Harper and often represent the ethical voice of the slums.
During the 87th Metro Merchant's Anuual Parader, General Eiling interrupted the festivities in search of Superman. Instead, he encountered seven non-super powered heroes. Vigilante 'deputized' four children in the audience and assigned to crowd control. "Gabby" had other ideas and attempted to use a construction crane to demolish Eiling, to no avail. Vigilante saved Gabby. After the battle, the children began to imitate Vigilante and Shining Knight instead of Metropolis' protector, Superman.
