Mr. and Mrs. Osgood are residents of Dakota City, both employed, and the parents of Jimmy Osgood, a student at Dakota Union High School. Mr. Osgood eventually purchased a handgun for protection and kept it in a locked drawer. Both were unaware of their son's depression until it was too late. Robert and Virgil Hawkins confronted Mr. Osgood and discovered his gun was missing.
