The Master is the head monk of the Temple of Nanda Parbat in the Himalayas. They exclusively follow the teachings of Rama Kushna, the goddess of balance. The Master lives in near-immortality in the fabled lands. He also was one of Bruce Wayne's martial arts teachers decades ago. The Master and his students lived in relative peace. That is, until they were visited by a contingent force from the Legion of Doom. Led by Lex Luthor, they were intent on taking the Temple's totem, the Heart of Nanda Parbat. The Master was buried under rubble by Devil Ray. The Legion used the Heart to take the souls of all the monks to use as a power source. Deadman, a recent friend of the Master, was distraught and wanted revenge. After the Heart was destroyed, the souls were returned and the Master survived.
