After World War II, Henry Moss and his colleague Harv Hickman excavated Castle Branek. Hickman discovered the powerful talisman, the Philoshopher's Stone. Hickman kept it a secret from Moss and used it for his own gain. While Hickman's popularity soared, Moss became a professor of archaeology.
Decades later, Morgaine Le Fey sought Moss, believing he had the Stone. The Justice League along with Etrigan came in advance to search Moss' home. Moss was startled by Etrigan and suffered a heart attack. J'onn stood in his place but Le Fey immediately sensed J'onn was disguised as Moss and went after Hickman.
